Lathrop posts win in WAC hoops debut

Lathrop started Western Athletic Conference play Tuesday night with a 61-57 win over Ceres.

 “It was a tough battle,” Spartans coach Craig Ward said. “We missed a lot of layups and free throws.

 “We could have finished stronger but I am happy with the tenacity we showed.”

 C.J. Ward paced the Spartans (1-0 WAC, 5-3 overall) with a double-double at 17 points and 10 rebounds along with two assists. Amiel Adams (four assists, four rebounds, three steals) and Aaron Doral added seven points apiece.

Manteca 41, Newark Memorial 39 

 MODESTO – Manteca outscored Newark Memorial by four points in the fourth quarter Tuesday for the opening-round win at Central Catholic High School. 

 “We did not play well,” Buffaloes coach Brett Lewis said. “It looked like a 3:30 game for both teams.

 “We only had four points most of the fourth quarter and we had problems getting it going.  

 Jorge Cedano led the Buffaloes with 16 points with Spencer Briscoe adding eight points. Nick Bell pulled in eight rebounds. 


Weston Ranch 94, 

McClymonds of Oakland 45

 STOCKTON – The host Cougars (7-1) held the Warriors (2-3) to six points in both the third and fourth quarters in the non-league contest.

 Donjae’ Lindsey led Weston Ranch ith 19 points, four assists and four rebounds. Anthony Lilly scored all of his 14 points in the fourth quarter, Devins Small had 10 points and four steals while Gavin Willburn tallied nine points, seven assists, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

 

Girls basketball 

Lathrop 66, Ceres 35

 CERES – The Spartans (1-0 WAC, 6-0) jumped out to a 35-13 halftime lead to open their WAC campaign. 

 Jasmine Denning and Mary Cotton paced Lathrop with 13 points each. Kiersten Constantino added 11 points, Kaysey Matela eight, Khiya Thornton seven and Sanah Singh five.

 “We were dominant from the start,” Spartans coach Dwayne Davis said. “I was not happy with some of the things we did defensively but we were a little too strong for them.

“We played good defense, especially in the back court.” 

 

Del Campo of Fair Oaks 52,

 Weston Ranch 36

FAIR OAKS – Weston Ranch (2-4) battled to a first quarter tie before Del Campo (2-6) pulled away for the non-league win.

 “We have improved,” Weston Ranch coach Chris Bauer said. “It was 8-8 at the end of the first quarter. 

 “We are trying to catch up and break old habits in games. The kids have accepted the challenge and I will go to battle with them any night.”

 Jennalyn Laminero led Weston Ranch with nine points followed by Zahbria Hendrix with five.

 

Lincoln of Stockton 57, Manteca 42

 The Buffaloes (5-2) found themselves trailing 41-21 at halftime at Winter Gym. 

 “The thing about playing teams like Lincoln is that they are a solid team who exploits your weaknesses and shows you what you have to work on,” Manteca coach Ryan Bono said. 

 Marissa Serrano led the Buffaloes with 14 points and Jayda Jackson added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

 

East Union 52, Tracy 42

 The Lancers (3-3) trailed 15-5 to start the game, but the bench came through for the win at Dalben Center. 

 “We had a good second half with quarters of 16 and 16,” East Union coach Jim Agostini said. “We had great scoring from the bench with 18 points. 

 “We got better as the game went along and I really like the 18 points off the bench.”

 Ashley Martin came off the bench and along with Lauren Pablo led the Lancers with 10 points each. Donja Payne added nine points and five blocks.

 

Oakdale 54, Ripon 48

 Leading 33-21 at halftime, the Indians (3-3) went cold in the second half.

 Reina Sausedo had a double-double for Ripon with 18 points and 11 rebounds along with five assists. Tianna Sidtikun added 12 points, five rebounds and an assist and Sydney Thomason had eight points, 11 rebounds and an assist.
