The Buffaloes got off to a great start Tuesday at home against Enochs, but a few uncharacteristic mistakes spelled doom in a 25-16, 22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 7-15 loss.
“The girls came out storming,” Manteca head coach Tim Horning said. “They played way better in the first game than I saw them play against Franklin. It was great, we’re making progress.”
Davina Bennett led the offense with 19 assists and Lyndsey Silva had eight digs.
Dallas Mould produced two blocks, as did Chellsee Lee (six kills).
Cynthia Perez handled the end line well, turning in 16 service points and five aces.
“We started making errors that we don’t normally make,” Horning said. “I’m hoping we can get through that in the preseason and bounce back from losing.”
Manteca (1-1) hosts a Foundation Game versus West Thursday.
It wasn’t a bad effort from the Timberwolves Tuesday in Stockton, but it wasn’t enough to get the job done on Edison’s sweltering hardwood in a 25-22, 15-25, 10-25, 22-25 loss.
“The game was a little slow, we weren’t moving our feet well, and that may have had a little to do with Edison’s gym – there was no air conditioning,” Sierra head coach Tevani Liotard said. “(Edison) had some big hitters, but nothing we couldn’t block or dig.”
Modesty Rodriguez came up big in the passing game again, turning in 17 assists, to go with a pair of digs and five service points.
Alysia Atkins had seven kills and five more service points, while Jaslynn Liotard produced five kills, five blocks, 15 digs, six service points and two aces.
Michelle Arroyo was good on two kills, four digs and eight service points, and Chelsea Bereta and Sierra Tailes had a pair of kills each.
“We played consistent, but obviously not enough to win,” Liotard said. “I’m sure I had a few gray hairs pop up on a couple of occasions.”
Sierra (1-1) travels to Johansen tonight.
Andrea Vega had two aces, and DeArbia Gardner turned in three kills in the Cougar loss.
Weston Ranch fell to 0-2 on the young season.
In Sonora, Ripon started off what will be a grueling preseason filled with tough opponents with a neck-and-neck loss to the Wildcats, 25-20, 23-25, 25-27, 30-28, 10-15.
Ashley Robinson had nine kills and six blocks, while Cheyanne Deprue and Kelsey Johnston (37 assists) had eight kills each.
Lauren Fedderson added seven kills of her own.
“It was a really good match,” Ripon head coach Larry Keethe said. “Both teams played darn good defense, and both teams served and hit well.
“It was a well-fought battle and a good match for us to start the season with.”
Ripon (0-1) will host Modesto for its Foundation Game Thursday before making its annual pilgrimage to Reno.
A match with Oakdale and the Golden Valley Tournament loom upon the Indians’ return.
