Manteca High’s boys tennis team dropped two of its first three matches in the California High School Tennis Classic Friday at Fresno City College.

The Buffaloes are competing in the third of eight competitive-based divisions that each consists of 16 teams.

They (3-3) drew two fellow Sac-Joaquin Section schools to start, defeating Ponderosa of Shingle Springs 4-2 before falling to Turlock by the same score. De La Salle of Concord edged out Manteca via tiebreaker (7-6 on total sets won) after battling to a 3-3 draw.

Manteca plays two more matches today.

“It was a really great day overall for us,” coach Frank Fontana said. “We got some experience, and that’s really what we come down here for.”

Xavier Lopez and Oral Nunis were Manteca’s top performers.

Lopez played at No. 2 singles against Ponderosa, posting a competitive 7-5, 6-4 victory that clinched the match for the team. His biggest test came against Turlock’s Alex Wolski, whom he beat 3-6, 6-2, 10-5.

Lopez came through again at No. 1 singles vs. De La Salle, winning 6-0, 7-6 (1).

“Xavier had a great day. He is definitely starting to put together his game,” Fontana said.

Oral Nunis represents half of the Buffaloes’ No. 1 doubles team. With usual partner Max Angelo, they dominated their two matches together in straight sets. Nunis was paired with freshman Jacob Webb in the De La Salle contest, and they won, 6-4, 6-4.

Fontana was also impressed by the No. 2 doubles tandem of Marcus Munoz and Sam Dhaliwal, who won two of three matches.
