Sarah Phillips got it going for East Union’s varsity wrestling team with a hard-fought 9-7 victory in the 103-pound match, but it was all Weston Ranch after that in a Valley Oak League double-dual Wednesday at Dalben Center.

Weston Ranch cruised to a 66-9 victory that was punctuated by Sterling Owens’ 3-2 upset of Devon Woodall, the VOL’s reigning heavyweight champion. Owens scored all three of his points (escape, takedown) in the third period.

The rest of East Union’s points came via forfeiture. Bobby Guillory gave Daniel Guzman a run in the 112-pound match won by Weston Ranch’s Guzman, 7-6.

The remaining matches ended by pinfall, seven of them coming in the first period for Weston Ranch.

East Union also faced Sonora and won, 58-20.

Phillips was the only Lancer to go 2-0, as she pinned her Sonora opponent in 2 minutes, 27 seconds.

East Union also split the double-dual meet at the junior varsity level, dispatching Sonora 48-35 and losing to Weston Ranch 48-24.

Jesus Vasquez (140) was the lone grappler for EU to win twice without a forfeit, recording pinfall victories in 3:59 and 27 seconds.
