Pires paces Lancers in VOL Tournament opener

 TRACY — East Union’s Michael Pires finished as a co-runner-up in the Valley Oak League opener on Tuesday.

He helped the Lancers hold off Sierra for third place in the team standings, carding an 8-over-par 80 at Tracy Golf & Country Club.

Estuardo Duque of first-place Oakdale was the individual low medalist with a 78. Oakdale’s Julian Velazquez and Central Catholic’s Ayden Wildenberg joined Pires in the logjam for second place. Ethan Freitas of Manteca was part of a two-way tie for fifth with an 81.

With five players placing in the top nine, Oakdale netted a team score of 415. The Mustangs were followed by Central Catholic’s 459. East Union registered a 471, two strokes ahead of Sierra. Manteca (502), Mountain House (524) and Patterson (580) round out the field.

East Union’s Tiago Chadinha finished in a 10th-place tie with a 90. Anthony Oteri added a 94 for the Lancers, Chase Kalin notched a 97 and Elias Muzquiz a 110.

Kevin Casillas paced Sierra with a 90. Richie Cervantez and Jorrden Llamas Mojarro each tallied a 92. Jace Neto added a 96, and Evan Hayne a 103.

Sebastian Cabrales recorded a 101 for Manteca. Cooper Chamberlain (106), Van Hendrix (106) and Logan Yago (108) followed suit.
