Ripon Christian held a slim six-point halftime lead, but used a 16 point third quarter to cruise past the Kimball Jaguars 46-31 Thursday in the opening round of the Hughson Tournament.
The Knights got a dominating performance from junior Mikaela Alger, pushing her way to 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the club in both categories.
“Mikaela is very athletic,” Ripon Christian head coach Ed Mulder said. “She plays underneath and just seems to find her way to the basketball.
“She rebounds very well and finishes at the basket very well.”
Ripon Christian continues along in the winner’s bracket, meeting up with Downey High of Modesto at 6:30 p.m. for second round action. Katie Thomas came in behind Alger with six points.
“My girls played well tonight,” Mulder said. “The biggest thing for us is that we are definitely getting better defensively.”
The Timberwolves battled through the first two periods, but could not keep pace with Brookside the remainder of the way, getting outscored 39-22 in the second half.
“It was a close game until about five minutes remaining,” Sierra head coach Stephan Unterholzner said. “They were up by five and went on a 10-0 run in the fourth to put the game out of reach.”
The Timberwolves were led by Alysia Atkins’ 19 points, followed by Jordan Johnson’s 14.
Sierra will continue tournament action in the loser’s bracket Friday in Lodi.
