RIPON — Ripon made quick work of visiting Orestimba in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Coed Team Tennis playoffs on Monday, cruising to a 7-2.

The Indians’ reward is a trip to Auburn today, where five-time defending champion Placer awaits.

“This is our third year in a row making the playoffs and we have a lot of seniors,” Ripon coach Robert Mayfield said. “We have 11 seniors and nine of them are starters. We lost a lot from last year’s team as well, so it’s great for us to still make the playoffs and get a win. But it’s going to be tough against Placer.”

Two-time Trans-Valley League singles champion Bryce Coutrakis defeated Ethan Cerutti 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 boys match. He was backed by No. 2 Isaiah Sanchez’s 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 win over Noe Segundo.

Diego Franco-Carreno and Julian Haun held off James Durkin and Marco Aleman 6-3, 7-5 in the competitive No. 1 boys doubles match. Robert Hutto and Evan Gibson also swept, 6-4, 6-2.

Ripon dominated at girls doubles, with No. 1 Hailey Johnson and Alyssa Demara winning 6-0, 6-3 and Alli Hickman and Sami Hyer prevailing, 6-1, 6-2. Hickman and Hyer are TVL champions and will join Coutrakis in the SJS Individual Tournament at Oak Park in Stockton later this week.

Nicholas Gagnon and Darlen Garcia squeaked out a 7-6 (5), 7-5 victory against Madison Cabral and Jonathan Jacobo in the mixed-doubles match. Orestimba girls singles players Mandy Wesley and Khiara Cardoza accounted for the Warriors’ points.

“Overall they played well,” Mayfield said. “We had a couple of kids that didn’t have a lot of experience at the beginning of the year but have come a long way. Nick Gagnon couldn’t hit a tennis ball six months ago and we look forward to having him back next year.”
