Manteca forced the Sac-Joaquin Section’s top softball team to go the distance in a 5-0 loss at home Tuesday.
It’s an achievement considering how Oakdale (4-0, 11-0-1 overall) obliterated its previous competition in the Valley Oak League, outscoring Kimball, Weston Ranch and Sierra, 43-0. Lexi Webb pitched a perfect game against Sierra on Monday.
Manteca (1-1, 4-4) did manage to get a baserunner on Tuesday, getting a base hit from Bella Gonzales.
“Very proud of how the girls came out today ant competed,” Manteca coach Josh Farris said. “Oakdale is one of, if not the best team in this area and I thought our girls did not back down at all. Even in defeat I think we learned a lot about our team and this will help us going forward with some tough games down the road.”
The Mustangs are ranked No. 1 in the section, according to MaxPreps computer rankings, and No. 20 in the Cal-Hi Sports State Top 25.
Alyssa Harnden and the Manteca defense kept it scoreless through four innings. She hurled all seven innings, giving up 13 hits and a walk while striking out five. Webb fired 14 strikeouts and helped herself with a home run.
