ROUNDUP: CC hands Manteca its 1st baseball loss of the season

 The Manteca baseball team took its first loss of the season Monday, as Central Catholic rallied with a late surge to prevail 6-4 under the lights of John Thurman Field in Modesto.

The host Raiders (3-1 Valley Oak League, 6-1 overall) blew a 3-0 lead by giving up four in the top of the sixth inning, Dane Williams belted a three-run double for Manteca (3-1, 9-1). Brennen Vega added a hit, a run and an RBI.

Sacramento State signee Kayden McHenry registered 13 strikeouts for the win, and Joe Farinha struck out the side in the seventh for the save.

The Central Catholic attack totaled 10 hits.

Marcus Davenport (double, three RBIs), Chase Perino (two runs) and Jacob Kisel (triple, two runs, RBI) drilled two hits apiece.

Manteca hosts game 2 of 3 on Wednesday.


East Union 6, Oakdale 5

After giving up the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh, East Union (2-2 VOL, 7-4 overall) answered with two in the bottom half to walk it off at Agostini Field.

Peyton Heath drove in a pair of runs, and Cage Woodall plated two. The Lancers were limited to four runs.

Peyton Wallace went 3 for 4 with a double and three runs for Oakdale (3-1, 7-2). Georgia-committed Landon Schutte rung up eight strikeouts over five innings.

The three-game set shifts to Oakdale on Wednesday.


Mountain House 7, Sierra 6

Sierra (0-4 VOL, 4-5 overall) started hot with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the lead did not hold up at Jack Thomson Stadium.

Mountain House (1-0, 7-2) scored at least a run in all but two innings, jumping ahead with two in the sixth. The two teams combined for 23 hits, but the host Timberwolves committed four errors.


BASKETBALL

Calla High won the Stein-hosted event last Friday with a 29-26 win over New Vision, needing to complete a late comeback to do so.

The Lobos were down eight points with six minutes to go. Ronnie Oyler trimmed the lead to one with a corner 3-pointer, and RJ Fontanilla gave them the lead for good with a traditional three-point play.

Fontanilla also came up big in an earlier game against New Vision leading up to the championship. He drained a last-second 3-pointer for a dramatic 30-27 Calla victory.

Calla also downed Elliot 30-13 and Village Oak, 37-7. Javier Esquivel amassed 22 points in the Village Oak win, and Joseph Aslami set the tone by scoring the first six points of the game. Village Oak was limited to a single point in the first half.

The Lobos met New Vision again, dropping a 39-23 decision before their winner-take-all rubber game.
