East Union’s flag football team opened Valley Oak League play on Tuesday with a 34-6 thumping of Patterson at Dino Cunial Stadium.
Quarterback Julianna Gaspar kept the Tigers’ defense off balance, completing 10 passes for 99 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 66 yards.
Vanessa Velazquez scored a touchdown and a safety while contributing a quarterback sack. Makayla Burlingame had two sacks to lead the defense to go with five tackles and a pass deflection. Alexa Bretao pitched in an interception.
Gwen Baker, Ava Barrera and Caliyah Lopez each scored a touchdown.
The Lancers (1-0 VOL, 6-3 overall) hosts Mountain House on Thursday.

The Timberwolves (1-0, 4-4) began their VOL title defense on the road and came away with a lopsided victory.
Tessa Zalunardo completed eight of 12 passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns and rushed seven times for 57 yards.
GIRLS TENNIS
Manteca 5, Oakdale 4
The Buffaloes went on the road and swept five singles matches, and that was good enough for them to prevail in the VOL opener.
Hailie Kim won the duel of No. 1s against reigning league singles champion Riley Avila, 6-2, 6-2. Shreya Raman took care of Madi McTague at No. 2, 6-3, 6-1. No. 3 Sahaj Ghuman fended off Holly Healy, 7-6 (6), 6-2.
At No. 5 singles, Rae Limbago dispatched Emmalee Krause, 6-4, 6-0. Ekam Ghuman coasted past Zoe Byron in the No. 6 match, 6-0, 6-1.
Oakdale won two of the three doubles contests in three sets.
Sierra 8, Central Catholic 1
The No. 1 singles match favored visiting Central Catholic, but the Timberwolves dominated the rest.
Sweeping in singles were Mikayla Villalobos (6-2, 6-1), Ruth Beedi (6-0, 6-1), Evelin Garcia (6-4, 6-1), Xitlali Gonzalez (6-1, 6-0) and Nadine Yamomo (6-0, 6-0).
Doubles winners were Amara Kenechukwu/Sadie Herrera (6-3, 6-0), Bhavika Karthikeyan/Janessa Felix (6-2, 6-2) and Melissa Castillo/Mia Soza (6-0, 6-2).
GIRLS GOLF
Lathrop 265, Johansen 310
Lathrop’s Ashley Abon was low medalist in the Western Athletic Conference dual match at Manteca Park Golf Course, finishing with a 55.
She was followed by fellow Spartans Kate Albisu (61), Kriselle Matela (68) and Savanna Quezada (78). Jadyn Thomason paced Johansen with a 75.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Ripon Christian 3, Hilmar 1
The Knights (1-0, 7-2 overall) passed their first Trans Valley League test, winning at Hilmar (0-1, 14-6), 25-15, 22-25, 25-15, 25-14
Ripon Christian was able to get the Yellowjackets on their heels with strong serving, registering 18 aces.
“They have a lot of solid hitters, so being able to keep them off the net helped us control play,” RC coach Kayla Kootstra said.
Haley Kootstra served up six aces, while setter Alanna Blanco racked up four aces to go with 41 assists.
Paige Van Hofwegen rapped 15 kills, while Brynn Bohn netted 12 kills and five blocks. Bella Blanco came through in the back row with 10 digs.
Central Catholic 3, East Union 0
The Lancers (0-2, 0-6 overall) were swept by the VOL champion in Modesto, 14-25, 15-25, 19-25.
Jocelyn Pena paced EU’s back row with 10 digs. Lilyan Frye produced six assists, two kills and two blocks. She split setting duties with Lily Grove, who had seven assists.
Maci Hall Anderson contributed three kills and six digs. Kennedy McLeod had two kills, six service points and two digs.
JV girls volleyball
Ripon Christian 2, Hilmar 1
Ripon Christian squeaked out the 17-25, 25-10, 17-15 comeback victory.
Bailey Brayton led the Knights with six kills and four aces. Brooklyn Postma collected nine assists and 10 digs. Kylie Koolhaas chipped in with three blocks.
Ripon Christian won the freshman match in two sets.
