The Lathrop girls basketball team’s regular season came full circle Thursday when it visited Los Banos to end Western Athletic Conference play.

The Spartans got off to a hot start and won decisively 48-27, completing their first-ever perfect run through league. It was at the Los Banos Tournament where Lathrop (14-0, 21-6 overall) began the season with back-to-back losses.

Dwayne Davis’ bunch has been locked in ever since, especially on the defensive end.

“Last time we were here early in the season, we were fouling everything in sight,” Lathrop’s ninth-year coach said. “We had to overhaul our lineup and approach to what we wanted to do and who we would play through. We’ve played great basketball for the last month and a half on the defensive end. It keeps us flowing if we’re not hitting shots.”

The shots were falling at the start of the game, as the Spartans rolled to an 18-7 lead in the first quarter. Senior guard Sanah Sunner led the balanced effort with 15 points, while Marianna Delgado had 11. Tatiana Lowery and Alaba Olaleye contributed eight and six, respectively.

America Estrada scored 14 points for third-place Los Banos (8-6, 15-13).

Up next for the Spartans is the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs starting next Tuesday. They’ll know their placement Saturday when the Section releases its brackets.

Ripon 48, Livingston 39

After a scoreless opening quarter on the road, the Indians (5-7, 11-15 overall) erupted for 24 points in the second and got the much-needed win in their Trans-Valley League finale.

Kailee Inderbitzin helped get Ripon out of its funk by hitting two 3s and scoring 10 of her 14 points in the second period. She also finished with six rebounds.

Gabby Delgado racked up game-highs 16 points and 13 rebounds. Makenzie Loechler added nine points and four boards. Shayla McKeon chipped in five points and nine rebounds.

Kali Cunningham paced Livingston (1-11, 4-20) with 15 points, draining five 3s.

“It was great to finish the year with a win, and now it’s wait-and-see if we get into the playoffs,” Ripon coach Rick Inderbitzin said. “Even though our record was not what we wanted, I would not trade this team for anyone. It was a pleasure to coach these young ladies.”

The junior varsity team also won, 38-35. The freshman team capped its undefeated TVL season with a 40-17 victory.

Ripon finds out Saturday if it qualifies for the SJS playoffs with an at-large bid. The Indians would need to finish in the top 15 of the SJS Division IV rankings and went into the game sitting on the 15th spot.
