ROUNDUP: Lathrop eyes 1st postseason baseball berth after sweeping Joho

The Lathrop baseball team capped a series sweep of Johansen at home Thursday, getting four RBIs from Jasper Tover and a five-inning two-hitter from Alyuss Duenez in a 13-1 win.

The Spartans (6-4, 8-6 overall) remain in the hunt for their first Sac-Joaquin Section playoff berth. The top four teams in the Western Athletic Conference advance.

They broke it open Thursday with a nine-run rally highlighted by a two-run triple from Omare Cross. Tover finished 3 for 3 with a run. Duenez added two RBIs to the onslaught. Lathrop totaled nine hits while also taking advantage of four walks and two errors.

From the mound, Duenez faced just three batters over the minimum, striking out 11 against two walks.

Lathrop is off from game action until next Friday, April 22 in a non-league contest at Weston Ranch. A big two-game set with WAC-leading Mountain House follows.

 

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Manteca 3, Kimball 0

The first-place Buffaloes (6-0, 12-5 overall) started the second half of their VOL schedule with a commanding 25-21, 25-15, 25-14 win in Tracy.,

Jon Rosas produced 28 assists, four kills and two aces. Camden Steckler fired 14 kills. Micah Crawford added six kills, and Nick Grabowski had four kills and two blocks.

 

Weston Ranch 3, Central Catholic 0

Abraham Palacios accumulated nine kills and five aces, spearheading a 25-13, 25-20, 25-16 win for visiting Weston Ranch (3-3 VOL, 10-11 overall).

Eleazar Nava set 16 assists. Also contributing to the attack were Marcos Arriaza with six kills and four aces, Amari Dacus with five kills and two aces and Josiah Zamarripa and James Gelisanga with three kills apiece.

 

BASEBALL

Oakdale 10, Weston Ranch 5

Steven Bustamante knocked in a pair of runs to help spot the visiting Cougars (0-8 VOL, 5-14 overall) am early 3-0 lead, but it didn’t last.

Oakdale (6-2, 12-6) answered with three of its own in the bottom half of the first inning and was up 10-3 after the third.

Weston Ranch plated its final two runs in the fifth, when Zyale Brown-Zanger and Ayden Tinsley drew bases-loaded walks.

 

BOYS GOLF

Trans-Valley League Tournament

Chad Flory and Ripon continued their tear in the TVL. The Indians won the fifth of six regular-season league tournaments with a score of 412 at Turlock Golf & Country Club.

Flory, who did not participate in the league opener, placed first individually for a fourth straight week, carding an even 72. He was backed by overall runner-up Trent Vink (81), Jeremie Little (84), Jacob Baird (87) and Vince Uecker (88).

Escalon finished second in the team standings with a 471 followed by Hughson (576), Livingston (580) and Hilmar (589).

Lathrop 547, Pacheco DQ

John Wall Jr. was low medalist against both Western Athletic Conference opponents Wednesday at Manteca Park Golf Course. Pacheco was two players shy of posting a legal team score.

Other scoring contributors for Lathrop: Jayden Wall (103), Kevin Rodriguez (103), Matthew Hammond (117) and Christopher Subia (132).

 

BOYS TENNIS

Kimball 8, East Union 1

No. 5 singles player Guadalupe Reyes ground out a 6-3, 7-5 (5) win over Tej Singh for East Union’s only win.

Dominic Ochoa was competitive at No. 1 singles but was defeated by Shishir Dammetti, 4-6, 5-7.

 

JV boys volleyball

Manteca 2, Kimball 0

Manteca (5-0 VOL, 10-2 overall) held on for the 25-18, 25-23 sweep.

Fernando Lopez led the Buffs with 13 assists, and Christian Pesqueda pounded four kills.
