The Lathrop boys tennis team continued its perfect start in the Western Athletic Conference this week with 8-1 wins over Johansen and Livingston on consecutive days.
On Wednesday, the Spartans made quick work of visiting Johansen.
Agam Singh downed Caden Johnson 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match, and Vincent Jiang defeated Gerald Morse 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.
Other singles victories came from Kyle Espiritu (6-1, 6-2), Matthew Rodrigues (6-1, 6-2) and Nico Campos (6-0, 6-3).
Rushil Kaidyala and Alton Torres O’Callaghan took the No. 1 doubles match, 6-3, 6-1. Jin Ibarra and Ishaan Bal won at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3. Johansen forfeited the third doubles match.
The road trip to Livingston on Thursday did not last long, as the host Wolves did not fill spots at No. 1 singles, No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles.
Jiang (6-4, 6-1), Espiritu (6-2, 6-2) and Kadiyala (6-3, 6-0) won at No. 2, 3 and 6 singles. Lathrop swept at No. 1 doubles (6-3, 6-1) and No. 2 doubles (6-2, 6-3).
Oakdale 5, Sierra 4
The host Mustangs prevailed in the Valley Oak League battle for second place.
Sierra (4-2, 5-4) could only muster one singles victory, as No. 4 Himmat Dosanjh edged Austin Speiller 4-6, 6-0, 10-2. Oakdale’s Matthew Yakligian took the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 3-6, 10-8 against Harshith Kumar.
Sagar Shah and Reyansh Bansode combined to win at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 6-4. Raunak Mahar/Ashvin Gill (6-2, 6-0) and Leelasourav Veeravalli/Johan Arroyo (6-2, 6-0) also won for the Timberwolves.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
East Union 3, Oakdale 0
The Lancers (2-1 VOL, 6-7 overall) swept 25-11, 25-19, 25-12 on the road.
Jon Apsay anchored the attack with four kills, 28 assists and seven service points. Jacob Padilla had his way at the net with 16 kills and two solo blocks. He also had six digs, five service points and three aces.
Cristiano Barajas racked up 19 service points, two aces, two kills and four digs. Javier Sandoval added eight points, four aces and five digs.
BASEBALL
Grace Davis 9, Lathrop 7
A total of 10 errors led to 11 unearned runs in the WAC contest in Modesto.
Grace Davis (1-1, 2-5 overall) took the lead for good with a five-run fourth inning and held on two split the two-game set.
Santino Arranaga went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Lathrop (1-1, 4-8). Isiah Bowden drove in a pair of runs. Ayden Louie added three runs scored and three steals.
Lathrop faces Ceres next week starting starting Tuesday on the road.
SOFTBALL
East Union 3, Bear Creek 1 (9)
The Lancers (6-3) plated two runs in the ninth inning to escape with the non-league win in Stockton.
Giselle Quiroz belted a double and knocked in a pair of runs. Savanna Lopez finished 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
Winning pitcher Fallon Norman struck out eight and walked two in six innings. Lily Pickering added six strikeouts over three innings of the combined five-hitter.
Elk Grove 8, Manteca 4
Manteca (5-2) amassed 10 hits but was burned by four errors, which led to four unearned runs.
Bella Cooper went 2 for 3 with a steal and two runs scored. Ayva Wilkins (double, run, RBI) and Sienna Owen (run, RBI) both finished 2 for 4.
Oakdale 15, Sierra 3
The visiting Mustangs (1-0 VOL, 3-3 overall) were ahead 5-0 after two innings and continued to tack on from there. They put it away with eight runs in the final two frames.
Giovanna Garcia and Sky Kane belted two hits apiece for Sierra (0-2, 5-2), each contributing a double, a run and an RBI. Valeria Villanueva also drove in a run.
Ripon 4, Orestimba 1
In Newman, Ripon (1-0, 8-3 overall) got off to a strong start in Trans Valley League play, thanks to a three-hit gem from pitcher Angelina Martinez. She accumulated 10 strikeouts and walked three.
Freshman Ellie Spurzem powered the attack, going 2 for 3 with a homer, a run and two RBIs. Addison Naranjo added a double and two runs.
Hailey Starr struck out seven against five hits and three walks from the circle for Orestimba (0-1, 7-2).
JV boys volleyball
East Union 2, Oakdale 0
East Union (1-1) dominated on the road, 25-8, 25-13.
Jake McMahon fired six aces, finishing with 13 service points. Bryson Villaverde netted five kills and two blocks. Kalieo Alvaro handed out five assists. Elijah Galvan led the defense with six digs.
