ROUNDUP: RC defends Southern League boys golf title

 The Ripon Christian boys golf team repeated as Southern Athletic League champion on Monday with a dominant effort at Pheasant Run Golf Club in Chowchilla.

The Knights netted a solid 399 score in the league tournament. Waterford was the closest with a 563, and Mariposa took third with a 614.

Denair’s Ethan Gonsalves was low medalist with an even 72, as he secured MVP honors.

Five of Ripon Christian’s six players made all-league led by Ethan Schenk, who finished as the tourney runner-up at 2-over 74.

Matthew Ubick (76), Trey Van Groningen (77) and Carter Van Groningen (86) placed 3-4-5. Jack Dooley carded the throwaway score of 95.

Ripon Christian will next compete in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI Tournament at Cherry Island next Monday, May 6.


BASEBALL

Los Banos 5, Lathrop 2

Visiting Los Banos (12-2, 16-6 overall) clinched sole possession of the Western Athletic Conference crown.

Lathrop (4-10, 9-16) made the Tigers earn it in its season finale. Tied after four innings, Los Banos gained separation with three runs in the fifth.

The Spartans were led by their seniors, as Adrian Zuniga (run) and Chris Williams (triple, run) went 2 for 3. Omare Cross drove in a run. Carson Scott hit a double in his only plate appearance.

Andrew Lopez (4 2/3 innings) and Anthony Gallardo (2 1/3 innings) combined to pitch a four-hitter. All five runs they surrendered were unearned, with the defense committing five errors behind them.


SOFTBALL

Ripon 9, Hilmar 2

The visiting Indians (8-0, 14-4 overall) scored four unanswered runs in the first four innings and doubled the lead in the sixth on the way to a lopsided Trans-Valley League victory.

Addyson Wilmshurst and Ava Brocchini both went 3 for 4 to lead the assault. Wilmshurst drilled a double and a triple and plated two runs.

Jaycee Wilmshurst was 2 for 3 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Alana Hernandez finished 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs. Izabelle Spurzem also went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs.

Pitcher Kharime Caratachea went the distance and scattered eight hits. She also had six strikeouts.
