ROUNDUP: Ripon rallies late for non-league baseball win at Downey

 Ripon’s baseball team rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning on Tuesday to escape Modesto with an 8-7 non-league victory over Downey.

Sophomore Frank Carter-Castro struck out the side in the bottom half of the frame for the save. Offensively, he went 3 for 4 with a run and three RBIs.

Jack Peters and Luca Damiano also finished 3 for 4 at the plate. Peters legged out a triple, stole a base, plated two runs and drove in another.

Fabian Nuno hit 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. Aiden Davis contributed three RBIs, and Brayden McDowell scored twice.

McDowell pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three. Damiano got the win, throwing 1 1/3 innings in relief.

The Indians (7-4) host Mountain House on Thursday for another non-league tilt.


Ceres 12, Lathrop 1 (5)

Landen Nolte drove in Elijah McAllister with a double for Lathrop’s lone run, closing the visiting Spartans (1-2, 4-9 overall) in 2-1 in the second inning of the Western Athletic Conference contest.

Visiting Ceres (3-0, 6-4) continued to rake away from there and put away its third consecutive mercy-rule victory. Lathrop was limited to five hits, including another double from Santino Arranaga.

Jack Oliver highlighted the Bulldogs attack with a triple and four RBIs.

Lathrop will look to even the series at home Thursday.


SOFTBALL

Ripon 13, Sonora 1 (5)

The Indians (2-0, 10-3 overall) needed just five hits in the Trans Valley League home game, as they benefited from seven walks, four hit batters and three errors.

Angelina Martinez shared pitching duties with Clara Townsend (hit, strikeout), accumulating five strikeouts, while allowing three hits and a walk in four innings.

Izabelle Spurzem drove in three runs, and Teagan Osborn plated three to go with an RBI. Townsend contributed two runs and two RBIs. Addison Naranjo went 1 for 2 with two steals, two runs and and RBI.

Ripon hosts Escalon on Thursday.
