The Sierra baseball team avoided a series sweep while picking up its first Valley Oak League win of the season on Friday, rallying past visiting Mountain House, 8-5.

The Timberwolves (1-5 VOL, 5-7 overall) trailed 4-0 after the top of the first inning and did not take a lead until they pieced together a five-run flurry in the sixth.

Jayden Pimental powered their four-hit attack, finishing 4 for 4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs.

Chad Simas Jr. and Fabian Fuentes were both 2 for 4 with two runs scored and one driven in apiece. John Thomson added an RBI double.

Koa Rodrigues was the winning pitcher in long relief. He threw the final 6 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on six hits while striking out four.

Jaitly Abhinav led Mountain House (2-1, 8-3) with three hits.

Sierra has two non-league road games next week starting with Pitman on Wednesday.

Central Catholic 4, Manteca 3

In Modesto, Manteca (3-3 VOL, 9-3 overall) played from behind for much of the game and tied it with two runs in the top of the sixth.

The Raiders (5-1, 8-1) quickly answered with the go-ahead in the bottom half, and Marcus Davenport retired all three batters he faced in the save to notch the save and secure the three-game sweep for his team.

Davenport also hit a two-run homer in the second inning. Joe Farinha contributed a solo shot of his own, finishing 3 for 3 with two runs.

Noah Navarro, Devon Richardson (doubled) and Nate Slikker each had an RBI for the Buffaloes, who could otherwise only muster four hits.

Ripon 3, Hughson 2

The Indians (1-1, 6-4 overall) were able to salvage a split in the Trans Valley League two-game set thanks to Fabian Nuno’s walk-off single.

They trailed all game until tying it with two runs in the sixth on Jack Haines’ two-run hit. Brayden McDowell contributed a double and a triple to the attack.

Winning pitcher Frank Carter-Castro went the distance, surrendering two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk, while striking out four.

Landon Petersen plated both runs for defending champion Hughson (1-1, 4-6) in the first and fifth innings.

SOFTBALL

Sierra 16, Johansen 2 (6)

After struggling to get untracked offensively in two VOL games earlier this week, the Timberwolves (5-2) broke out for 10 hits in Modesto. They also drew five walks, two hit batters and took advantage of five errors from winless Johansen (0-3).

Valeria Villanueva highlighted Sierra with a home run and three RBIs. She also pitched two perfect innings that included four strikeouts.

Anaiah Minjarees went 2 for 2 with an RBI. Maitland Kohoutek and Sky Kane (double) each knocked in a pair of runs. Juliana Silva (four runs scored, two steals), Adriana Medieros (run, two RBIs) both hit a double. Giovanna Garcia plated three runs.

Medieros also pitched four innings.
