Jasmin Correa and Megan Oblin won two races each, and the Sierra girls track and field team held off visiting East Union 66-61 by taking first in the 4x400 relay in the Valley Oak League opener Thursday at Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium.
Correa took first in the 400- and 800-meter races, while distance standout Oblin took care of the mile and 3,200. The Timberwolves needed every point with the Lancers getting big efforts from sprinter Jadyn Snaer and hudler Patricia Tajii.
Sierra dominated the boys competition, 107-22.
“I told our girls to not hang their heads, because the VOL is very tough this year and anything can happen,” East Union coach Rick Cuevas said. “The girls are going to get much faster now that we can train on our track. I’m pretty happy with our performance.”
The Lancers have had to train on grass until recently, as the school’s track was flooded from the winter storms.
Snear and Nicole Robertson went 1-2 in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Tajii claimed the two hurdle events, and the trio was part of the winning 4x100.
Donja Payne took first in the shot put and second in the discus. Michaela Pangburn won the high jump.
Returning CIF State Championships placer Bikram Thiara led the Sierra boys with wins in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Kyle Wesley rolled to victories in the 100 and 200. Arshnik Cheema was the winner in both the shot put and discus.
Next week is a big one for both programs. Sierra heads to Oakdale, while Kimball hosts East Union, Weston Ranch and Central Catholic in a four-way meet on March 16.

LATHROP — Isaias Hunter, Lathrop’s first-ever state qualifier last season, set a new school record in the high jump with a 6-foot, 8-inch leap. He also won the long jump and was the runner-up in the triple.
Tremayne Willis (10.78) and Anthony Santos (23.18) clocked solid times in winning the 100 and 200, respectively. They were also joined by Galven Munoz and Dan Ballesteros on the winning 400 relay. Tyrell Cooper took first in the individual 400.
Nathaniel Hoban led a Spartans sweep in the shot put, and Frankie Edu had the top mark in the discus throw.

LATHROP — The Spartans dominated in the sprints and hurdles in the rout.
Myani Thornton and Zakiyaa Nelson were the top two finishers in both the 100 and 200, and Kalani Akers and Jasmine Harrison joined them to claim the 4x100.
Akers also took first in the long and triple jumps, while Makaela Akers was the winner in the high jump.
Cynthia Barajas spearheaded a sweep in the mile. April took first in the 3,200.

LATHROP — Dario Hunter (long, triple jumps), Jamie Abida (110, 300 hurdles) and Indio Alvarado (shot, discus) were the top performers for Lathrop. Jeffrey Hargreaves contributed first-place points in the 400.

Cole DeVore placed first in the 110 and 300 hurdles. David Correa won the 400 and 800.

LATHROP — Ally Giordano blazed to wins in the 100 and 200 and aided the 4x100 relay’s first-place finish.
Rea Duhalongsod won the high jump and was also on the winning 4x400. Delana Robinson took the 400 and led the 4x400. Kasey Matela was victorious in the triple jump and took second in the long.
Sierra 102, East Union 19
The Timberwolves overwhelmed their rival behind multi-event winners Jeida Lavender (200, 400) and Dulce Cruz (shot, disc).
Jasmine Galvan highlighted East Union with wins in the 1,600 and 3,200.
