Sierra boys rout Beyer Patriots

It might have taken the Sierra Timberwolves a little time to make sure everything was firing on all cylinders Saturday night in their non-league contest against the Beyer.

But by the time the third quarter rolled around, Sierra couldn’t be stopped – blowing the doors off of the Patriots in a 65-46 routing that secured the Timberwolves’ sixth straight victory.

“We got off to a good start, but then they hit a three at the end of the first quarter to draw closer,” Sierra head coach Scott Thomason said. “They outscored us in the second quarter, but about midway through the third quarter we just started playing really well.

“We imposed our will, established our confidence and controlled the boards and those were key to us walking away with a win tonight.”

Will Ward finished the game with 29 points while Guillermo Nunez finished with 10.

The win improves Sierra’s record to 6-2. The Timberwolves will see the court next on Wednesday when they take on the visiting Golden Valley Eagles.

Anderson Tournament
Manteca 50, Oroville 47
The Buffaloes were able to finish their play in the Anderson Tournament on a high note, taking down the Oroville Tigers for a third-place finish in the three-day tourney.
Manteca closed out tourney play with a 2-1 record, and made significant strides in what will be the club’s final tune-up before the opening of the Valley Oak League season.
“We were in control for the majority of the game,” Manteca head coach Dave Asuncion said. “They were able to hit a couple of baskets late to make it closer than it really was on the scoreboard.”

The Buffaloes got another dominant performance from E.J. Godfrey, who turned in a team-high 15 points on his way to the all-tournament team. Taylor Hasal finished in double-figures with 10.

Ceres Lions Tournament (Girls)
Manteca 63, Ceres 33
It was a perfect combination of offensive prowess and defensive aggression that helped the Manteca varsity girls wrap up their fifth win the last six games Saturday night with a 63-33 trouncing of the Ceres Bulldogs.

Manteca held a 36-18 lead heading in the locker room at halftime, and came out on a 17-4 run in the third quarter before Buffaloe head coach Andrea Hiatt decided to sit her starters for the remainder of the game.

Ceres only hit five field-goals throughout the entire contest, and instead nailed 20 free-throws to put themselves on the board.

“We lost yesterday in a game that we shouldn’t have lost, so the girls came out today with a purpose,” Hiatt said. “They were determined to prove themselves today, and I think that they did just that.”

Sharon Washington led Manteca in scoring with 20 points, while Tia Tuuga followed close behind with 17 points. Both earned All-Tourney honors for their performances.

The win improves Manteca’s record to 5-1. They’ll take the court again on Tuesday when they take on the visiting Livingston Wolves at the Dr. Robert C. Winter Gymnasium.
