Sierra High sweeps Franklin in volleyball

Sierra swept visiting Franklin-Stockton 25-9, 25-0, 25-16 in non-league volleyball action Thursday at Sierra High.

Julie DeAnda had nine aces for the Timberwolves with Vanessa Benham picking up three blocks, seven aces and six kills and Megan Westfall dishing out 12 assists

 

East Union 3, Riverbank

The Bruins gave the Lancers all they could handle Thursday as East Union had to win the last two sets for the 25-14, 20-25, 21-25, 25-17, 15-6 win.

“We played really sluggish in the second and third sets and just didn’t have a lot of energy,” Lancers coach Rich Posz said. “With some senior leadership they picked up and found the identity in the fourth and fifth sets.

“We played those last two sets with a lot of energy and were finally aggressive on the defensive side which led to a lot more scoring opportunities.”

Jordyn Posz had 22 assists and two digs for East Union (4-1). Melissa King had 12 kills and Mariah Jeffrey five. Jeffry and Sophie Williams each had three blocks.

 

Weston Ranch 3,

Chavez-Stockton 1

Iris Murphy and Jennifer Viguerias combined for 45 digs for the Cougars (4-5) in the 25-17, 16-25, 25-22, 25-18 win.

Murphy had 23 digs and Vigurias 22. Amaya Finley had 15 kills and three aces and Vigurias had 17 assists.

The Weston Ranch sophomores (1-3) lost 21-25, 25-27 and the Cougars freshmen remained undefeated at 4-0 but it took them three sets, 18-25, 25-10, 15-11.

 

Bear Creek 3, Manteca 1

The Buffaloes (2-2) won the first set 25-17 before dropping the next three 23-25, 20-25, 25-27.

“We started off pretty well but then we kind of got away from what we needed to do,” Manteca coach Kevin Bolding said. “We had our ups and downs, but we are getting there.”

 

Sophomores

Sierra 2, Franklin 0

Carlee Maharin had seven kills and two aces to lead the Timberwolves to a 25-14, 25-11 win.

Melanie Fox added seven assists and two aces.

 

Freshmen

Sierra 2, Franklin 0

Juana Bingham tallied 19 service points for the Timberwolves in their 25-7, 25-7 sweep. 

Jenna Bolton added 10 service points and one kill.
