Sierra squeaks past Bear Creek in OT

Sierra survived a near second-half collapse Thursday during the opening round of the McDonald’s Classic.

The Timberwolves (3-2) outscored Bear Creek 7-3 in overtime and held on for a 52-48 victory after the Bruins hit a game-tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation.

Sierra was led by Devin Nunez’s 12 points and led 31-11 at the half.

“We just had no killer instinct to us,” Sierra head coach Scott Thomason said. “(Bear Creek) had all the momentum, but we held our composure, kept on grinding, made a couple plays in overtime and were able to grind that one out.”

Sierra led managed only 14 points in the second half.

Seniors Jonnythan Munkholm, Josh Patton and Hunter Johnson all finished with eight points for Sierra, which will play against Oakland tonight at 8.

Manteca 47,
Mariposa 39

The Buffaloes improved to 4-2 during the opening round of the Atwater/Buhach Colony tournament.

Manteca was led by Austin Haro’s 22 points.

T.J. Muhar finished with 12 rebounds as Manteca outscored the Grizzlies 27-19 in the second half. Freshman Tytus Zerhoeven tallied six points and five blocks.

Manteca will play the winner of Escalon/Buhach Colony tonight at 8.

Lodi 58, Weston Ranch 48

The Cougars were led by Jaelen Ragsdale’s 13 points and Jordan Taugo had eight for Weston Ranch (3-4), which squares off with Edison today at 3:30 p.m.

Oakmont 55,
Ripon 50

Senior guard Chase DePrue led the Indians with 19 points during a first-round loss at the Del Oro tournament.

Ripon (0-3) made it to a one-point game with a little over a minute left in regulation and eventually had to start fouling.  Senior center Derek Hickman finished with 10 points for the Indians, who will play the loser of Inderkum/Del Oro today at 5:30 p.m.

Ripon Chr. 67, Rosemont 50

The Knights (3-1) hopped out to a 21-7 lead and never looked back during a first-round victory at the Galt Warrior Classic.

Five players scored in double-digits for RC. Travis Vander Molen and Sean Broker each had 14 points. Eric Broker tallied 13, Danny Vander Molen 11 and Austin Alger 10. The Knights will play the winner of Linden/Galt today at 8:30 p.m.

Manteca 58,
Golden Valley 39

The Buffaloes (5-1) were led by Kevonte Boone’s game-high 16 points during the opening round of the Atwater/Buhach Colony tournament. Angel Perez added 12 points and Ramon Gallardo eight.

East Union 58, Bear Creek 49 (Wednesday)

Austin Millers scored a team-high 19 points as the Lancers improved to 5-1. Eric Flores finished with 12 points and Malik Thomas nine. Gyse Hulsebusch netted 15.

FRESHMAN

East Union 66, Bear Creek 49 (Wednesday)

Chris Molina led the Lancers (6-0) with 18 points and Scott Morenzone chipped in with 12.
