Twolves improve to 4-0 after sweeping past Edison

Sierra setter Emma Brierly is sneaky.

With the third set tied at 19 after being tied at 15, 16 and 17, the Timberwolves back row fielded an Edison serve and bumped it to Brierly. With the Vikings braced for Brierly to set instead she flipped the ball over the net to break the tie and start a 4-0 run before winning the third set for a 25-15, 25-16, 25-21 sweep in non-league action at Sierra High.  

“That is kind of like a trick move I have,” Brierly said. “When the ball is not right where it needs to be for me to set I just hit it like a little getaway. 

“We pushed through tonight. We got down in the last set and were able to come back.”

With the win The Timberwolves are undefeated at 4-0, losing just three sets in those four matches. The four wins also ties the total win output for Sierra last season. 

“The girls want it this year,” Timberwolves coach Trinity Johnson said. “All across the board they have had a taste of what a losing season is so they are ready to go.

“The girls just want it more than they have in the past. They are putting aside all the petty differences. This is our house, and when you come inside the house, everything stays outside.”

Lindsey Walljasper was dominant in the net for Sierra with six kills, two blocks and an ace. 

“I am super excited,” Walljasper said. “This is a great way to start off my senior year. I couldn’t be more happy with the team and adding coach (Eryn) Bowers has been great.

“It’s just a great program with the way we are starting out and I am so happy with my teammates.” 

In addition to 25 assists, Brierly had seven service points, three kills and two digs. Hailey Steele added six kills, 11 service points and two aces; Kylie Matteroli added five kills, Dulce Cruz had four kills and seven service points and Hailey Steele had six kills, 11 service points and two aces.  

Sierra dominated the first two sets, taking the lead for good at 7-6 in the first and 3-2 in the second. Edison (0-2) made the third set close before the Timberwolves pulled away at the end for the win.

Natalie Diaz had four kills and three blocks for the Timberwolves and Stella Brierly added four aces in Sierra’s 25-13, 25-13 win.

Kylie Machado had 10 service points and Jenna Villanueva played with great passion in a 25-5, 25-13 win for the Timberwolves.
