Sierra High made the trip north to take on the Tokay Tigers and outstanding defensive play helped the Timberwolves return victorious, holding the Tigers in check on their home court in a 48-38 win over Tokay Wednesday in preseason action.
Sierra (2-2) opened the contest on a 16-6 run, stifling the Tigers in their home gym with an intensified defensive effort.
“We played outstanding defensively the entire night,” Sierra head coach Scott Thomason said. “We were really able to bother them. It was impressive to be able to hold them to 38 points on their home court.”
Post presence Will Ward led the Timberwolves’ offensive effort, turning in a game-high 15 points to lead all scorers. Teammate Edy Guzman finished the contest with 10, while Eddie Andrade and Guillermo Nunez both chipped in with eight. Jerrod Patton added seven for Sierra.
Sierra will be back on the hardwood Friday when they host the Johansen Vikings for the team’s home opener.
East Union (2-3) trailed at the intermission 27-24, but outscored Riverbank by four in the third period to take the lead. A miserable fourth period left the Lancers on the short end of a contest they could have won.
“We had a tough time shooting the basketball tonight,” East Union head coach Brett Lewis said. “We were 3-for-22 from 3-point range, and you cannot win a basketball game going 3-for-22 from beyond the 3-point line.”
Brandon Kline held the hot hand early, nailing three 3-pointers in the first period on his way to a team-high 11 points. Wayne Cheung chipped in with seven for the Lancers. Riverbank senior Zach Gonzales led all scorers with a 15 point evening.
“He is a very good player who can do it all, and coming into this game the main thing we talked about was not letting him get hot and get his,” Lewis said of Gonzales. “I felt like we did stop him, because 15 points for him is not a huge night.
“He hit a three late that was sort of a dagger, but it basically was that we just went cold.”
The Lancers will get more than a week off to prepare for their next home game Dec. 17 against Enochs High.
