Sierra wins 2 in Cup opener

The Sierra girls soccer squad won both of its games during the opening rounds of the Timberwolves’ Vern Gebhardt Cup Friday, capped by a 3-1 victory over Buhach Colony of Atwater.

Alexis Young scored the game’s first goal from her fullback position, assisted by senior Jessica Cueca. Elise Barajas assisted the second goal that made it 2-0 after pushing a ball through to Naomi Nunis.

The T’Wolves’ captain Canales provided the 3-0 cushion after sinking a free kick from 30 yards out in the right-top corner of the cage.

Buhach Colony sophomore Sadie Montague helped her squad avoid the shutout with a second-half goal netted against Sierra’s reserve goalie Marissa Scott (two saves). The Timberwolves’ starting goalie Emma Broderick had two saves in the first 30-minue half.

The Tigers couldn’t muster a score during the second round of the tournament as the T’Wolves upped their record to 4-2-1 overall and are 1-0 in the Valley Oak League.  Kaleigh Doyle made it 1-0 in the 37th minute off an assist from Canales. In the 45th minute, Sierra scored its final goal off of a corner kick. Marissa LaQuaglia put it away as senior Jessica Cuenca found her on the assist. Broderick finished with four saves for Sierra, which outshot Tokay 16-4 overall and will play today at 10:45 a.m. at Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium against Gregori-Modesto. The winner of Sierra-Gregori will face the winner of Tracy-Franklin for the tournament championship slated to begin at 3 p.m.

Lathrop and Weston Ranch were both shutout in both of its matches. The Spartans suffered a 3-0 loss to Tracy and a 2-0 loss against River Valley-Yuba City. The Cougars fell to both Gregori and Franklin, 3-0.

The T’Wolves won their second game with a shutout after knocking off River Valley 6-1 in the opener. McKenna Doyle combined for five goals on the day. Sarah Lenowitz, Carolina Ortega, Manjot Kaur (2), Alyssa Thaboa and Brianna Osegura all found the back of the net as well for Sierra (4-2-1).
