STOCKTON — Manteca High stumbled in the tournament opener of the McDonald’s Edison Classic, falling to San Joaquin Memorial of Fresno on Thursday, 69-50.
The Panthers relied on a pesky defense and steady shooting from the outside.
“Going in, we knew they would take a lot of 3-pointers,” Manteca High coach Dave Asuncion said.
All told, Memorial connected on eight treys, including a big one by Royshon Snowden early in the fourth period.
The Buffaloes rallied back from a 37-17 halftime deficit, controlling the boards while driving strong to the basket. Junior guard Ben Odell had 10 of his 16 points during that stretch, with C.J. Rivas twice pounding the ball from inside and Taylor Hasal getting a floater to drop.
“After we got down by 14 and in deep a hole, I challenged my team at the half-time. They responded with a strong second-half effort, Asuncion said.
Manteca got the sizable lead down to 12 before Snowden’s trey.
From that point, the Panthers put the game out reach with an 11-3 run.
“My concerns are what we have to do to get better as a team,” Asuncion said.
He got solid effort from Rigo Gutierrez off the bench. The senior guard had 11 points including three 3-point baskets.
Hasal finished with eight and Tim Baker closed things out with a pair of treys.
Manteca center EJ Godfrey went into the contest averaging 25 points per game but was limited to three points.
The Panthers were led by Nick Ball, who sliced through the Manteca defense for 17 points. Duke Doulphus, a 6-5 sophomore forward, had nine from put-back shots.
Kellen Hackett chipped in with eight.
Memorial jumped out to an 18-4 in the opening quarter, building up the advantage to 26-5 in the early goings of the second period.
The Buffaloes will play McNair today at 5:30 p.m. The Eagles suffered a 63-61 to Woodcreek.
The Timberwolves of Roseville will square off against Memorial at 7 p.m.
Other games scheduled for the three-day event include Chavez battling the host Vikings in the early (4 p.m.) game and Berkeley meeting Edison of Fresno at 8:30.
