SOCCER: Sierra, EU girls dominate in Mendiola Classico openers

Sierra and East Union may clash later today in the Ervin Mendiola Memorial Classico girls soccer tournament at Woodward Park.

Both started out with two lopsided wins on Friday.

Sierra trounced Downey 8-1 in its pool-play opener, then waxed River Islands, 8-0.

The Timberwolves totaled 41 shot attempts in the two contests. Senior forward Leslie Reyes burned River Islands for a hat trick, finishing the day with four goals and one assist. Kaylee Rodriguez had two braces.

Zoe Sutton assisted five goals and scored one of her own. Freshman Diana Reyes contributed three goals and one assist. Haley Gama dished out three assists, all against River Islands.

Maitland Kohoutek, Abigail Fraser, Gianna Reyes and Roxy Le added one goal apiece.

Freshman goalkeeper Ava Bonilla collected four saves total.

The Timberwolves (4-1) play Patterson this morning at 8 with a chance to make the final.

Tourney host East Union (2-2) picked up its first two wins of the season, knocking off Lodi 3-1 and Emerald of Dublin, 7-0. The Lancers end tangle with Bradshaw Christian in their pool finale.

 

Oakdale Tournament

Ripon Christian (3-1) notched shutout wins over Grace Davis, 3-0, and Livingston, 1-0.

Tatum Sonke, Raegan Burgess and Kylie Koolhaas were the goal scorers against Grace Davis. Brooke Barnes contributed an assist. Morgan Schenk collected six saves.

Koolhaas accounted for the lone goal in the Livingston game, striking in the second half.

The Knights close out group play with Johansen today at 9 a.m.

Ripon (6-2) also started with two clean sheets, blanking El Capitan 3-0 and Tokay, 4-0. The Indians meet Enochs today at 11:30 a.m.
