Spartans finish first season at .500 with victory

WESTON RANCH – The Lathrop High sophomore girls basketball team finished its first Valley Oak League season at 8-8 with a 39-27 win over Weston Ranch Monday night.

Jasmine Elder led the way with 13 points and Krystal Ruiz added 10.

Erica Sanchez and Cheyanne Celada had six apiece.

“I’m very proud of the way the girls finished for a new school,” Lathrop head coach Ed Fang said. “With only three girls that played high school ball last year, I feel we made quite an accomplishment for a new school. We look forward to next year.”

East Union 58, Oakdale 39
Every Lancer but two scored Tuesday night as East Union improved to 20-4 overall and 14-1 in VOL play.

Briona Fontenot had 14, Morgan Hulsebosch 13 and Katrina Camara 12.

EU grabbed 25 steals, with Gabby Molina swiping five and Brittany LaMar four.

EU travels to Manteca Thursday looking to wrap up at least a share of the league crown.

Sierra 38, Central Valley 21
Stephanie Vanni, Lyssa Allen and Jordan Johnson each had 10 for the victorious T’Wolves.

Bryttni Griffin added nine rebounds.

“It was a good game, we bounced back from our loss at East Union,” Sierra head coach Arsenio Costa said.

Sierra (13-1 VOL, 25-2) travels to Weston Ranch Thursday.

Freshman
East Union 54, Oakdale 24
Kristen Piasecki had 18 points, five steals and two assists in the win, while Allison Telles racked up 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Stephanie Bishop added nine points, 10 steals, 12 rebounds and four assists and Klasey Kachalkin scored nine.

Sierra 26, Central Valley 25
Down 12 in the third quarter, Sierra stormed back and took its first lead with 16 seconds remaining in the fourth when Joana Ortiz made a steal and laid it in for the game-winner.

Lia Unterholzner had seven points, nine rebounds and three blocks, while Kelly Paredes added four points and five steals.

Stephanie Davis had four points, Allison Armstrong had four more and seven rebounds and Joanna Ortiz provided four points and seven steals.

Shelby Shirron had three points and nine rebounds.

“The girls didn’t give up,” Sierra head coach Steve Unterholzner said. “It was a satisfying win as we lost to CV by 19 at their place. It was nice to get that one back at home.”

BOYS
Sophomore
Weston Ranch 55, Lathrop 28
In Stockton, Joseph Renaud had 16 points and 13 rebounds in leading the Cougars past the Spartans.

Jerome Arevalo added eight.

“Everyone scored,” Cougars head coach Eddie Menzel said. “We played very good team ball, everyone contributed.”

Weston Ranch (5-9 VOL) hosts Ceres tonight.

Weston Ranch 49,  Lathrop 28
Marlon Aumentado and Dan Nelson both had 13, Alante Lockett added eight and Will Cavil had seven in the Weston Ranch win.

Lathrop led at the half, but the Cougars outscored the Spartans 38-18 over the final 16 minutes.

Weston Ranch (8-6 VOl, 10-8) hosts Ceres this afternoon.
