With East Union giving up five points due to forfeits, Kalissa Martin led host Manteca to a 9-0 Valley Oak League girls tennis win in the season opener for both teams.
With the No. 1, 2 and 3 Buffaloes singles player getting the day off, Martin — normally No. 4 or No. 6 — made the best of her promotion to No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-0 straight-sets win over Cheyanne Sanchez.
“I haven’t played in a while,” Martin said. She is also playing for Manteca’s softball team. “This was my first day back and it was pretty good. We came out, did our job and we did pretty well.”
At No. 1, Manteca’s Chloe Marquis defeated Karina Schambeck 6-1, 6-4 and the Buffaloes’ No. 3 Christina Nguyen bounced back from a close first set to down Selena Medeiros, 7-5, 6-0.
In the only doubles match, Manteca’s Charleen Maduyag-Eva Passion nearly got a straight-sets win over Alayna Bottoms-Jea’Marie McCarter, 6-0, 6-1.
Manteca is the two-time reigning Sac-Joaquin Section Division III champion, winning three Section titles in the last four years.
