Timberwolves cant overcome slow start

WESTON RANCH — Sierra High’s sophomore boys basketball team did well to take a 17-16 lead into halftime after scoring just two points in the opening quarter but ultimately fell to Weston Ranch 41-37 in Valley Oak League action Friday.

Lorenzo Simmons spearheaded the host Cougars’ second-half charge and finished with 12 points. Camron Turner added 10.

Edy Guzman was the Timberwolves’ lone double-figure scorer with 13 points.

“We came out flat and did not execute well on offense tonight,” said Sierra coach Justin Muschott, whose team fell to 4-3 in league and 9-8 overall.

Manteca 60, East Union 40
At Winter Gym, Eric Godfrey led three Buffaloes in double figures with 15 points. Taylor Hasal pumped in 13 points, and Josh Walters added 11.

East Union 59, Manteca 49
At Winter Gym, East Union (7-0, 14-2) continued its undefeated streak to start league behind Wayne Chung’s 18 points.

Alex Del Rio pitched in 11 points and eight rebounds. Zac Carillo also pulled down eight boards.

Manteca (5-2, 12-6) was led by Tim Baker’s 13 points, and Stanley Walker had 11.

Weston Ranch 40, Sierra 36
At Weston Ranch, Sierra’s Jojo Berry led all players with 10 points, but it wasn’t enough for the visiting Timberwolves (1-6, 4-12)

Alante Lockett finished with nine points for Weston Ranch (4-3, 7-6).
