WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Sierra’s Dittman, Gonzalez take 2nd in Frogtown XC Invitational

Sierra’s Christian Gonzalez and Anna Dittman placed second in the 3-mile varsity school division races during the Bret Harte Frogtown Cross Country Invitational held Saturday at Calaveras County Fairgrounds.  

The Timberwolves were among the six area schools to compete.

Gonzalez paced the varsity boys’ third-place finish with his runner-up time of 16 minutes, 30.55 seconds. Ripon took eighth in the 24-team field, followed by 11th-place Lathrop, 13th-place Ripon Christian and 24th-place River Islands.

Riley Gier led Lathrop, finishing 15th in 17:43.65. Miguel Acosta-Pearson took 22nd (18:15.10) for Ripon. Joining them in the top 50 are Sierra’s Max Perez (32nd, 18:46.16), Ripon’s Lucas de Vera (35th, 18:58.10), Sierra’s Malcolm Nguyen (37th, 19:10.31), Sierra’s Caleb Narayan (43rd, 19:21.88), Ripon’s Matteo de Vera (45th, 19:25.97), Ripon’s Landen Morse (47th, 19:29.15) and Ripon Christian’s Matijs Zylstra (48th, 19:34.09).

Dittman clocked in at 19:11.76 in the varsity girls competition, as Sierra led area schools in fifth place. Ripon came in seventh. Teammate Monse Saavedra placed eighth in 21:06.78.

Sophia Jung spearheaded Ripon in 12th place (21:40.53). Mackenzie Collins (21st, 22:56.18) and Lilliana Rodriguez (34th, 23:48.24) were the top performers for Lathrop.

Manteca entered individuals for the varsity girls large schools race. Paisley Coenenberg led the Buffaloes in 22:12.15, good for 12th place out of 60 runners.

Manteca’s Manuel Lopez (fifth, boys sophomore large schools), Manteca’s Emanuel Saldana (sixth, boys sophomore large schools), Sierra’s Mateo Cervantez (ninth, sophomore small), Ripon Christian’s Elizabeth Rich (ninth, frosh-soph small), Ripon’s Carmelo Rodriguez (eighth, frosh small), Ripon’s Makenna Norton (seventh, JV girls) and Ripon’s Alisson Montiel (eighth, JV girls).

 

GIRLS GOLF

TVL Midseason Tournament

Ripon (424) and Ripon Christian (444) finished in third and fourth place, respectively, in the Trans Valley League tourney Monday at Micke Grove Golf Links.

Hilmar was the top finisher with a 365 score, and Hughson took second with a 395.

Cameron Seefeldt led Ripon in the individual standings, taking third with a 19-over 91. Grace Ortmann (108), Brynn Daley (112) and Eve Toledo (113) also scored for the Indians.

 

FLAG FOOTBALL

Lathrop 14, Livingston 13

The Spartans (4-1, 9-2 overall) held on for the road win that forced a three-way tie atop the Western Athletic Conference. Livingston (4-1, 7-10) is the defending champion.

Angelique Gonzalez came through with two sacks in the fourth quarter to help Lathrop preserve its slim lead. She also had seven tackles, while Faith Butler tallied nine tackles and two pass deflections.

Quarterback Luz DeLuna led the offense with efficient passing, finishing 17-of-19 for 109 yards, one touchdown and two completed point-after tries.

Moira Ramones scored both of Lathrop’s touchdowns, registering 35 yards on six receptions and 56 yards on 10 rushes.

 

GIRLS TENNIS

Mountain House 8, Manteca 1

Manteca 8, East Union 1

Manteca faced off against defending Valley Oak League champion Mountain House on Sept. 16 and bounced back from the lopsided loss with a dominant win over East Union.

Freshman Hailie Kim defeated Vivian Zhang 6-4, 6-2 for the Buffaloes’ lone win at Mountain House.

Two days later, Kim continued her undefeated start to the season with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Saihaj Ghuman (6-0, 6-1), Paisley Coenenberg (6-0, 6-0), Rae Limbago (6-0, 6-0), Ekam Ghuman (6-1, 6-0) and Alyson Alvarado (6-0, 6-0) also cruised to comfortable singles wins.

Shreya Raman and Delialah Sanchez Torres won at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-0. Zoey Pratt and Karamdeep Kaur squeaked out their win at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6.

Sideout September Tournament

Calla participated in the second edition of the tournament in Tracy geared for alternative schools.

Host Stein also welcomed Los Banos Valley, Ripperdon, Yosemite, Mountain Vista, Vista Oaks and New Vision.

Calla faced off with Manteca Unified rival New Vision in the title match, winning 2-1. Village Oaks placed third. RJ Fontanilla starred in the championship, amassing 13 kills and six aces. Valentino Contreras served nine aces, and Cece Ruelas had 15 receptions.

Lathrop 32, Livingston 0

Aviahna Calderon completed eight of 10 passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns while adding another score on the run.

Ailyn Alcaraz and Madilynn Nungary contributed one TD apiece. Kathrine Guerrero highlighted the defense with two interceptions, and Ayeli Amezcua accumulated six tackles and two for losses.
