RIPON — Throughout the past few seasons, quite an emotional rivalry has developed between Ripon and Modesto Christian.

As a result, the Indians were expecting a much tougher fight from the Crusaders than they got Wednesday in a 4-1 win at Park View Elementary.

With the win, Ripon improved to 9-0-1 on the season, and 1-0 in Trans Valley League play.

Renae McFadden racked up a hat trick, scoring in the 38th, 67th, and 70th minutes, while Lauren Goeppert got into the scoring act with an 18th-minute goal on a Kallie Jacobs cross.

Jacobs set up McFadden on her second goal with a 20-yard through, and Meredith Perkins set up McFadden’s first score on a long cross over numerous heads from the right side.

Ripon outshot MC 17-6 in the first half, and 35-11, all told.

Morgan Torres-Unger had five saves and Kelsey Meeuwse was outstanding in the defensive backfield.

“Our defense played well,” Ripon assistant coach Bryce Perkins said. “We forced them forward, and nothing got through Kelsey’s zone. She’s developing into a very strong player at right fullback.”

Up 2-0 at the half, Ripon allowed three MC shots in the first minute of the second, one of which touched net off the foot of Sierra Licata.

Ripon shut down all MC scoring opportunities from that point on.

The Indians face RC Monday, Hughson Wednesday and Escalon Friday next week.

The Knights have played well this season under head coach Travis Haveman, but Wednesday afternoon RC had a couple of breakdowns that led to the lopsided finish.

The Huskies led 4-0 at halftime.

“Today was pretty disappointing,” Haveman said. “I thought we’d be more competitive. But we still can be, we just have a few things we need to fix. We have a few new senior players this year.”

Before the Knights tackle Ripon Monday, they head to Big Valley Christian for a three-game tournament this weekend.

With Mayra Ambriz still sidelined, backup keeper Monica Castillo stepped in and had a decent outing, allowing all three McNair goals in the first half.

“We picked it up in the second half,” Cougars head coach Carlos Gaspar said. “Monica played well, she had seven saves.”

Marissa Bradshaw found net for the Cougars (1-5-1) in the second half with a penalty kick.

“We have to be ready to play 80 minutes,” Gaspar said. “We have to play from the first whistle to the last, stay strong and keep our heads in the game.”

Weston Ranch continues its busy week with a home tilt against Summerville this afternoon.
