No. 3 Nova avoids upset against Western Michigan

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Eric Paschall had 17 points, including a 3-pointer with 2:50 to go, to help rally No. 3 Villanova past Western Michigan 76-65 at the Charleston Classic on Thursday.

The defending national champion Wildcats opened 3-0 for the fourth straight season. Not that it was easy after Western Michigan cut a 14-point second-half lead to 59-56 with 6 minutes left. 

No. 4 OREGON 76,

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Chris Boucher had 25 points and nine rebounds to lead Oregon to its 27th consecutive home victory.

Jordan Bell added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Ducks (2-1), who took control early in the second half with an 11-4 run fueled by Bell’s eight points to open a 52-38 lead. Bell scored 12 points in the second half as Oregon shot 15 of 27 from the field

No. 9 WISCONSIN 69, CHICAGO ST. 51

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Vitto Brown scored 12 points and Khalil Iverson added 11 for Wisconsin.

Bronson Koenig added 10 points for Wisconsin (2-1), while Fred Sims scored 26 points to lead Chicago State (1-1).

The Badgers again struggled with their outside shooting after taking 39 3-point attempts, but hitting just 11 in Tuesday’s loss to No. 22 Creighton.

No. 11 Xavier 83,

Missouri 82, OT

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Edmond Sumner’s free throw with 0.3 seconds left in overtime gave Xavier the victory in the opening round of the Tire Pros Invitational.

Sumner was fouled by Missouri’s Terrence Phillips along the sideline, after the Musketeers inbounded the ball near midcourt. He missed the first one short, then rattled in the second for the win.

No. 12 LOUISVILLE 88, LONG BEACH ST. 56

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Jaylen Johnson had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Deng Adel added 11 points for Louisville.

The Cardinals (3-0) outscored the 49ers 23-2 over 5:28 in the first half for a 30-8 lead en route to their third straight 30-point win to open the season. Louisville’s height advantage made the difference on both ends as it controlled scoring in the paint 42-20 and rebounding 51-37.

No. 16 UCLA 88,

LOS ANGELES (AP) — T.J. Leaf had 26 points and 10 rebounds and fellow freshman Lonzo Ball added 13 points for UCLA.

Thomas Welsh had 12 points and 11 rebounds as one of six players in double figures for the Bruins (3-0), who failed to top 100 points for the first time this season. They averaged 110.5 points in victories over Pacific and Cal State Northridge.

San Diego’s Brett Bailey tied his career high with 22 points and Cameron Neubauer added a career-best 14 points despite playing the second half with three fouls.

Bailey’s 3-pointer drew the Toreros (0-3) within four points early in the second half before Leaf and Ball teamed up for an entertaining offensive show.

No. 23 TEXAS 85, E. WASHINGTON 52

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Tevin Mack scored 19 points and Texas rolled to an easy victory.

Texas had five players score in double figures as the Longhorns’ entirely new starting lineup has started smoothing out the rough edges in their 3-0 start to the season.

Freshman Andrew Jones scored 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

Kendal Yancy scored 10 points, opening the game with consecutive 3-pointers, and Texas built a 39-24 lead at halftime.

Bogdan Bliznyuk scored 22 points for Eastern Washington (1-2).
