OLYMPIC HIGHLIGHTS

• Four years after a late fade left her wearing bronze in Beijing, Sanya Richards-Ross got the 400-meter gold she always thought she should win. She surged to the finish and punched her fist when she crossed the line in 49.55 seconds to give the U.S. its first track and field gold medal of the London Games.

• Britain’s Andy Murray beat Roger Federer 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 to win the gold medal in the Olympic tennis final. Behind raucous crowd support at Wimbledon, the Scotsman swept nine consecutive games to take control, breaking Federer’s serve four times in a row and erasing all nine break points he faced.

• Serena Williams followed her own Golden Slam by teaming with big sister Venus to continue their dominance of Olympic women’s doubles tennis. They beat Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-4 for their third Olympic doubles gold.

• Tiki Gelana won the women’s marathon despite tumbling on a rain-slickened London street. Around the halfway point, the Ethiopian was knocked down by another runner as she reached for her water bottle, a hard fall that bloodied her right elbow. But she found new motivation and finished in 2 hours, 23 minutes, 7 seconds.

• Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor beat Italy in straight sets in the beach volleyball quarterfinals to remain on track for a third consecutive gold. The Americans earned a berth in the semifinals against Beijing bronze medalists Xue Chen and Zhang Xi. In the other quarterfinals, the No. 2 U.S. women’s team of Jennifer Kessy and April Ross beat the Czech Republic 25-23, 21-18. The Americans will play the winner of the remaining quarterfinal between top-seeded Larissa and Juliana of Brazil and Germany.

MEDALS

• China regained the lead in both gold and overall medals at the London Games. China has 30 golds and 61 medals overall. The United States has 28 golds and 60 overall. Britain is third with 16 golds and 37 overall.

• Five-time world champion Hamid Soryan won Iran’s first gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling, beating Rovshan Bayramov of Azerbaijan in the men’s 55-kilogram class. Iran has 30 overall medals in freestyle but had only a silver and a bronze in Greco-Roman before Sunday.

NOT THEIR FINEST HOUR

Kobe Bryant is averaging a measly 9.0 points per game for the U.S. men’s basketball team. Other than a four-minute stretch in a historic 83-point mashing of Nigeria, Bryant hasn’t gone on one of those solo scoring sprees that have helped define him. His explanation? “I haven’t had to. I don’t have to, not on this team.”

SLOW START, SLOW FINISH

Double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius failed to reach the Olympic final of the 400 meters, following up a bad start with a slow race and finishing last in his semifinal heat. Pistorius is still expected to run the 4x400 relay. Last year, Pistorius and South Africa won the silver at the world championships.
