Gilbert leads Nuts to win over Quakes

RANCHO CUCAMONGA  (AP) — Logan Gilbert struck out 11 hitters over seven innings, leading the Modesto Nuts over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in a 2-0 win on Sunday.

Gilbert (2-0) picked up the win after he allowed two hits.

Modesto scored its runs when Connor Kopach hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and Matt Sanders hit an RBI single in the eighth.

Leo Crawford (0-3) went six innings, allowing one run and seven hits while striking out eight to take the tough loss in the California League game.

The Quakes were blanked for the third time this season, while the Nuts’ staff recorded their third shutout of the year.

QUAKES 9, NUTS 4: RANCHO CUCAMONGA: (AP) — Eric Peterson had three hits and two RBI as the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes defeated the Modesto Nuts 9-4 on Saturday.

Down 4-3, the Quakes took the lead for good with three runs in the third inning. Connor Wong hit an RBI single and then scored on a double by Peterson en route to the two-run lead.

Sven Schueller (2-1) got the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief while Sam Delaplane (3-1) took the loss in the California League game.

The seven extra-base hits for Rancho Cuca. included a season-high five doubles.

 RIVER CATS 4, GRIZZLIES 3: FRESNO  (AP) —Austin Slater hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, leading the Sacramento River Cats to a 4-3 win over the Fresno Grizzlies in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday.

The home run by Slater scored Mike Gerber and was the game’s last scoring play.

The Grizzlies took a 3-2 lead when Jacob Wilson hit an RBI single, scoring Carter Kieboom in the third.

Sacramento starter Tyler Beede (2-1) picked up the win despite allowing three runs and seven hits over five innings. Opposing starter Scott Copeland (2-2) took the loss in the Pacific Coast League game after allowing four runs and 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Kieboom homered and doubled, scoring a pair of runs while also driving home a couple for the Grizzlies.
