Hjelle, Hawkins lead Giants to win over Nuts

SAN JOSE (AP) — Courtney Hawkins homered and had two hits, driving in two, and Sean Hjelle allowed just four hits over six innings as the San Jose Giants defeated the Modesto Nuts 4-2 on Wednesday.

Hjelle (1-2) picked up the win after he struck out four and walked one while allowing one run.

Up 1-0 in the fourth, San Jose extended its lead when Hawkins hit a solo home run.

After San Jose added a run in the fifth on a single by Bryce Johnson, the Nuts cut into the deficit in the sixth inning when Cal Raleigh hit an RBI double, driving in Jarred Kelenic.

The Giants tacked on another run in the sixth when Peter Maris hit a solo home run.

PORTS 4, RAWHIDE 0

STOCKTON (AP) — Jordan Devencenzi hit a two-run double in the fifth inning, leading the Stockton Ports to a 4-0 win over the Visalia Rawhide on Wednesday.

The double by Devencenzi, part of a three-run inning, broke a scoreless tie before Mickey McDonald hit an RBI single later in the inning.

The Ports tacked on another run in the sixth when Lazaro Armenteros hit an RBI double, scoring Jameson Hannah.

Stockton starter Brady Feigl (4-2) picked up the win after allowing seven hits over eight scoreless innings. Opposing starter Cole Stapler (3-4) took the loss in the California League game after giving up four runs and seven hits over six innings.

RIVER CATS 2, DODGERS 1

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Chris Shaw hit a run-scoring double in the eighth inning, leading the Sacramento River Cats to a 2-1 win over the Oklahoma City Dodgers on Wednesday.

Abiatal Avelino scored on the play after he led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a ground out by Anthony Garcia.

In the top of the first, Sacramento grabbed the lead on a single by Shaw that scored Avelino. Okla. City answered in the fifth inning when Rocky Gale hit a solo home run.

Gale homered and singled twice for the Dodgers. Errol Robinson singled three times.
