Lewis leads Nuts to win over Ports

STOCKTON  (AP) — Nick Zammarelli and Luis Liberato connected on back-to-back homers in the first inning to help lead the Modesto Nuts to a 12-10 victory over Stockton Ports on Monday.

Zammarelli hit a three-run shot before Liberato hit a solo shot that gave the Nuts a 4-0 lead.

Trailing 6-1, the Ports cut into the deficit in the third inning when Skye Bolt hit a two-run home run.

The Nuts later added four runs in the fourth and two in the sixth. In the fourth, Kyle Lewis hit a three-run home run and Kevin Santa hit a solo home run, while Lewis hit a two-run home run in the sixth.

Stockton saw its comeback attempt come up short after Edwin Diaz and Luke Persico hit solo homers to help cut the Modesto lead to 12-10.

Stockton missed an additional scoring opportunity in the sixth, when Persico struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Lewis homered twice and singled twice, driving in five runs and scoring three in the win. Zammarelli homered twice and singled, driving in five runs and scoring a pair.

Jeffeson Medina (3-0) got the win in relief while Stockton starter Jake Bray (1-3) took the loss in the California League game. Wyatt Mills retired the side in order for his fifth save of the season.

In the losing effort, Kevin Merrell, Dairon Blanco and Diaz each had three hits for Stockton. The Ports also hit a season-high four home runs.
