Persico leads Ports over Modesto Nuts

MODESTO  (AP) -- Luke Persico had four hits and two RBI as the Stockton Ports defeated the Modesto Nuts 7-5 on Sunday.

Angel Duno struck Joe Rizzo out with a runner on second to end the game for his fifth save of the season.

Modesto batted around in the first inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring four runs, including a three-run home run by Nick Zammarelli.

After Stockton scored three runs in the third, the Ports took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth inning. Dairon Blanco and William Toffey hit RBI singles en route to the two-run lead.

The Ports tacked on another run in the fifth when Kevin Merrell hit an RBI double, driving in Luis Barrera.

Modesto saw its comeback attempt come up short after Rizzo scored on a ground out in the eighth inning to cut the Stockton lead to 7-5.

Pat Krall (1-0) got the win with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief while Jeffeson Medina (3-2) took the loss in the California League game.

The seven extra-base hits for Stockton included a season-high seven doubles.

Bryson Brigman tripled and singled, also stealing a base for the Nuts. Zammarelli homered and singled, driving home three runs.

With the win, Stockton improved to 7-3 against Modesto this season.
