STANFORD (AP) — Cameron Scarlett had the best day of his career, yet all Stanford coach David Shaw wanted to talk about was the fifth-year senior’s blocking on a pass play early in the second quarter that led to a Cardinal touchdown.
“That was the biggest challenge we gave Cam this year, was that he needs to be a great pass protector,” Shaw said. “We’re faking on the left side and the safety blitz came on the right and Cam came all the way down and made a great block and allowed us to get that ball off. I can’t say enough about where Cam Scarlett is right now. Just playing such great football.”
Scarlett rushed for a career-high 157 yards and a touchdown, quarterback Davis Mills had another impressive game in place of injured starter K.J. Costello before apparently getting hurt himself, and Stanford pulled off its biggest win of the season, stunning No. 15 Washington 23-13 on Saturday night.
The Cardinal (3-3, 2-2 Pac-12) extended their home winning streak to six games, dating to 2007, against the Huskies with a plodding, methodical offense that kept Washington quarterback Jacob Eason on the sidelines for long chunks of the game.
Stanford dominated Washington (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12) in nearly every offensive category and held an 18-minute edge in time of possession.
Jet Toner added three field goals to help the Cardinal, who have won back-to-back games following a three-game losing streak.
Scarlett carried the ball 33 times, including nine times on Stanford’s final drive when the Cardinal worked five minutes off the clock to seal the win.
Stanford got a big lift from its defense, which harassed Eason into an interception and forced a punt on Washington’s first two drives in the fourth quarter.
No. 13 Oregon overcomes
slow start to beat Cal 17-7
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — When Oregon found itself uncharacteristically scoreless at halftime against California, senior linebacker Troy Dye took it upon himself to deliver a halftime speech.
The No. 13 Ducks went on rally for a 17-7 victory over California on Saturday night.
Oregon (4-1, 1-0 Pac-12) trailed until Cyrus Habibi-Likio’s 1-yard touchdown run with 1:38 left in third quarter made it 10-7. Justin Herbert extended his streak to 33 consecutive games with a touchdown pass, connecting with Jaylon Redd with 7:14 to go in the game.
The Ducks, whose only loss this season came in the opener against Auburn, were held scoreless in the first half by the surprisingly resilient Golden Bears (4-2, 1-2).
Junior Devon Modster made his first start for Cal in place of injured quarterback Chase Garbers. After struggling last week when Garbers got knocked out of Cal’s loss to Arizona State, Modster fared better against Oregon’s defense.
Modster threw for 190 yards and a touchdown against the Ducks, who hadn’t given up a TD since the game against the Tigers.
Herbert’s streak of games with at least one touchdown pass is the longest in the nation among active players. He was tied for seventh nationally with 14 touchdown passes this season going into the game.
Herbert threw his first interception of the season on Oregon’s opening drive. He went into the game on a streak of 174 consecutive passes without a pick.
Cal senior safety Ashtyn Davis snagged the interception. Cal’s secondary, dubbed “The Takers,” has amassed 27 career interceptions, but just three this season. The Golden Bears went on to score on the drive when Modster connected with Chris Brown on a 22-yard touchdown pass.

Sac State beats E. Washington
SACRAMENTO (AP) — Kevin Thomson passed for 315 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more TDs to help Sacramento State beat Eastern Washington 48-27 on Saturday night.
Thomson scored for the Hornets (3-2, 1-0 Big Sky Conference) on a 2-yard keeper to make it 41-27 with 6:16 left in the game. The Eagles (2-4, 1-1) drove to the 16 but Dariyn Choates strip sacked Eric Barriere and George Obinna recovered and returned it 66 yards for the Hornets’ second defensive touchdown with 2:18 left in the game.
Miguel Garcia intercepted Barriere’s pass and returned it 27 yards to make it 21-7 with 14 seconds left in the first quarter.
Elijah Dotson ran 16 times for 102 yards and caught six passes for 47 yards and a score for Sacramento State. Isaiah Gable had seven receptions for 104 yards and a TD.
Barriere passed for 309 yards and two TDs and ran for 103 yards and a score for Eastern Washington. Jayson Williams had seven catches for 120 yards and a TD.

San Jose State beats New Mexico
SAN JOSE (AP) — Josh Love passed for 405 yards and two TDs and San Jose State beat New Mexico 32-21 on Friday night.
The Spartans (3-2, 1-1 Mountain West Conference) scored the first 26 points of the game and Matt Mercurio added a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter to make it 32-14.
Cedric Patterson capped the scoring for the Lobos (2-3, 0-1) with a 38-yard TD catch from Sheriron Jones with 4:52 left in the game.
Nick Nash made it 6-0 with a 9-yard TD run in the middle of the first quarter. Billy Humphreys caught a 5-yard touchdown in the second quarter and Bailey Gaither scored on an 80-yard TD catch to give San Jose State a 20-0 lead with 8:42 left in the period.
Mercurio followed with a pair of field goals to make it 26-0. Mercurio had an extra point blocked after the opening touchdown and a field goal blocked later in the first quarter.
Tre Walker had seven catches for 130 yards for the Spartans.
Jones passed for 127 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions and ran for 104 yards and a score for the Lobos.
