Stockton Ports hold off Nuts

STOCKTON (AP) — Luis Barrera hit a two-run triple in the fourth inning, and Brallan Perez singled three times as the Stockton Ports topped the Modesto Nuts 5-4 on Thursday.

The triple by Barrera started the scoring in a four-run inning and gave the Ports a 3-1 lead. Later in the inning, Perez and Dairon Blanco hit RBI singles.

Following the big inning, the Nuts cut into the deficit in the sixth inning when Ryan Scott hit an RBI single and Nick Thurman hit a two-run single.

Stockton starter Matt Milburn (4-2) picked up the win despite allowing four runs and 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings. Opposing starter Ljay Newsome (4-4) took the loss in the California League game after giving up five runs and eight hits over five innings. Angel Duno retired the side in order for his sixth save of the season.

In the losing effort, Modesto got contributions throughout its order, as five players had at least a pair of hits. Thurman doubled and singled twice, driving home two runs.

With the win, Stockton improved to 8-3 against Modesto this season.
