Sweet, Rodriguez spur Modesto to 10-2 win over Stockton

MODESTO (AP) — Julio Rodriguez had five hits and four RBI, and Devin Sweet hurled seven scoreless innings as the Modesto Nuts topped the Stockton Ports 10-2 on Wednesday.

Sweet (1-0) allowed two hits while striking out eight and walking one to pick up the win.

Up 2-0 in the second, Modesto extended its lead when Rodriguez hit a two-run double.

The Nuts later scored in three additional innings to put the game out of reach, including three runs in the fourth.

GIANTS 6, RAWHIDE 0

SAN JOSE (AP) — Tristan Beck and three other pitchers combined for a shutout as the San Jose Giants topped the Visalia Rawhide 6-0 on Wednesday.

Beck (2-2) went six scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out six and walking four to pick up the win. Justin Lewis (3-2) went four innings, allowing one run and five hits in the California League game. He also struck out four and walked two.

In the bottom of the third, San Jose grabbed the lead on a sacrifice fly by David Villar that scored Kyle McPherson. The Giants then added a run in the fifth and four in the eighth. 

The Rawhide were held off the scoreboard for the ninth time this season, while the Giants’ staff recorded their 10th shutout of the year.

ACES 5, RIVER CATS 1

SACRAMENTO (AP) — Jamie Westbrook hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, leading the Reno Aces to a 5-1 win over the Sacramento River Cats on Wednesday.

The home run by Westbrook came in the midst of a five-run inning and gave the Aces a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Blake Swihart hit a three-run home run.

Jon Duplantier (1-2) got the win with two innings of scoreless relief while Sacramento starter Justin Haley (2-2) took the loss in the Pacific Coast League game.
