Van Horn’s walk-off single in 10th propels Giants over Modesto

SAN JOSE (AP) — Brandon Van Horn hit a walk-off single with two outs in the 10th inning, as the San Jose Giants topped the Modesto Nuts 6-5 on Wednesday.

Fabian Pena scored the game-winning run after he started the inning on second and advanced to third on a flyout by Randy Norris.

After Modesto’s Cal Raleigh hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth, San Jose tied the game 5-5 in the bottom of the inning when Heliot Ramos hit a two-run single.

Ports 4, Rawhide 0

STOCKTON (AP) — Gus Varland allowed just five hits over seven innings, leading the Stockton Ports over the Visalia Rawhide in a 4-0 win on Wednesday.

Varland (2-1) picked up the win after he struck out six.

Stockton scored one run in the fifth on an RBI single by Jordan Devencenzi. The Ports scored again in the seventh inning, when they scored three runs, including an RBI single by Nick Allen.

Cole Stapler (3-6) went six innings, allowing one run and five hits while striking out 10 to take the tough loss in the California League game.

River Cats 5, Chihuahuas 4

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Francisco Pena hit a run-scoring double in the seventh inning to give the Sacramento River Cats a 5-4 win over the El Paso Chihuahuas on Wednesday.

Zach Green scored on the play after he reached base with a double and advanced to third on a double by Pena.

The double by Pena scored Green to give the River Cats a 5-4 lead.
