East Union is showing signs of peaking at just the right time.
One week after claiming the Sierra Invitational title for a seventh year in a row, the Lancers capped the regular season with a perfect record Wednesday with a 235-283 win over visiting Central Catholic at Manteca Park Golf Course.
With a 12-0 (16-0 overall) mark, East Union stands a very good chance at earning its eighth straight league crown in Valley Oak League Championship next Tuesday at Swenson Park Golf Course. Second-place Sierra and Kimball each have three losses.
Co-head coach Dennis Wells said the team still has a ways to go if it wants to successfully defend its Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV crown.
“Team-wise, we’re close to where we want them to be but not quite there yet,” Wells said. “I feel like we’re pretty close after today. We’re cutting down on a lot of silly mistakes.”
Brooke Riley is in line to be coronated as the VOL’s Most Valuable Player for a third straight year. She finished even-par 37 Wednesday and was low medalist in every league match for East Union.
Chloe Cardenas, one of four freshmen regulars in EU’s lineup, pieced together an impressive round, carding a 43. Rebeca Leonard followed with a 49, Natalie Cowan had a 52 and Allie Tajii turned in a 53. Laura Hazen’s 53 paced Central Catholic.
“That’s Chloe’s low score for the season and she was real happy with that,” Wells said. “We’re proud of her.”
