With Yankees teammate Tony Sanchez stifling the Giants bats Friday night, Dominick Garcia led an 11-hit attack that helped bury the Giants in a 16-1 mercy rule elimination win for the Yankees in the in-house Northgate Little League majors tournament at Gillen Field.
Garcia (3 for 4, four RBI, home run, double, four runs) blasted a three-run home run that ended the game via the mercy rule in the fourth inning. Also contributing to the Yankees hit parade were Lincoln Coenenberg (2 for 3, RBI, three runs), Christian Jose (2 for 3, RBI, run) and Tony Sanchez (2 for 2, RBI, run).
Jesse Martinez reached on an error to lead off the Giants second and came in to score on Jacob Qualle’s single. The Giants appeared to be poised for a second run in the frame but a pinpoint throw from Colton Nascimento in center to Coenenerg at the plate cut down Danny Olaquibal who tried to score from second on Qualle’s single.
Sanchez got a strikeout to end the Giants second with two runners on base and then retired the next six batters in a row to end the game. Sanchez finished with three strikeouts, four hits, a walk and no earned runs.
The Yankees continue the tournament today at noon against the Mets.
