STOCKTON — The Patterson Pirates put up six runs by the end of the second inning Sunday, and the Manteca A’s cold not come up with the timely hitting they needed to close the gap, leaving runners stranded in every inning totaling 12 a 9-7 loss to the Pirates.
The loss eliminates the A’s in the District 67 Juniors Tournament of Champions at Paul Weston Park.
The big inning for the Manteca was a three-run third. Consecutive walks to Mikey Kollar and Maddox Morales followed by a single by Eaphram Burns (2 for 5, three runs) brought Michael Valdez (3 for 4, three RBI, two doubles) to the plate with the bases and no out. Valdez singled in Kollar, Josh Husband (2 for 4, two RBI) plated Morales with a sacrifice fly to center and Jorge Gallardo singled in Burns to bring the A’s within 7-5. Manteca left the bases loaded in the inning.
After Patterson scored three runs in the top of the first inning, the A’s answered with two in the bottom of the first. Valdez doubled in Morales and Husband singled in Burns to make the score 3-2. That was as close as Manteca would come. Valdez doubled in Morales in the fifth inning and Cohen Paddock singled in Burns in the seventh for the other two A’s runs.
Manteca’s Tino Torres went 2 for 4. Valdez pitched the last five innings for the A’s, giving up three runs, two of them earned.
Patterson’s Tyler Thorp was 3 for 3 with an RBI and three runs. Owen McGuire (two RBI) and Michael Carter (two runs) were each 2 for 3.
