There was a great turnout this Sunday at Manteca’s Spreckels Park BMX race track, with nearly 200 racers and spectators in attendance.

Manteca’s Olympic hopeful Meghan Matthews held a new rider’s clinic in the morning before races started, passing her knowledge on to 25 local racers.

In race action, Sage Bordenave had an impressive debut, leading his 7 Novice main event until the final turn when Camden Smalley, of Lodi made a daring pass and took the win at the finish line.

In the older age groups, 30-and-over was well represented with 20 riders participating in five divisions.  The 41-Over Experts capped off an exciting day of racing with lots of elbow to elbow racing, and some wild spills.

Bob Coover of Orinda came out on top of the Expert race, and Chris Westbrook of Stockton won the Cruiser division.

Races are held on Sundays. Signup and practice times are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with racing starting as soon as possible. ABA BMX membership information is available on race day.

The track is located at Spreckels Avenue, cross street Moffat Blvd.  Admission is free for spectators, and there is a $10 entry fee for racing.  Helmet, long sleeves, pants and a BMX or mountain-style bicycle are required to compete. Loaner equipment is available at the track.
