Yet, head coach Jeff Williams expected a little more out of his Timberwolves in their 210-276 victory over Ceres Thursday at Manteca Park Golf Course.
“It’s not what we wanted to shoot,” Williams said. “Our goal is 200 or less.”
With Thursday’s match being the first in the Valley Oak League season, that goal is certainly reachable for a team that returns its top six golfers from last year’s second-place finisher.
Michael Hajenga recorded the low score with a 3-over-par 40. His teammates weren’t too far behind.
Miguel Dominguez shot a 41, Luis Zepeda 42, Joey Matts 43 and Sammy Matts 44. Paul Michaeletto’s 45 did not count against the team’s score, but it’s a solid round nonetheless for Sierra’s No. 6 golfer.
Joey Matts rebounded well after a rusty start, beginning 7-over par after five holes but finishing strong at 2-under over the final four.
The Timberwolves (1-0, 3-0 overall) will play three straight days next week, starting with Central Valley at home Monday.

At the par-3 St. Stanislaus Golf Course in Modesto, Kenny Summers earned medalist honors with a 5-over 32 for the Buffaloes (1-1, 1-3).
Casey Benson turned in a 38, Nick Gonzales 42, Tyler Canady 43 and Jared Woolf 48.
“We had two guys that haven’t played before, and that was a good course for them to get their feet wet,” Manteca coach Dave Fontanilla said.
Manteca next host Ceres Tuesday at Manteca Park Golf Course.
At Spring Creek CC, freshman Jake Ratto penciled in a 5-over-par 41 for medalist honors in the Indians’ first conference match of the season. Hughson’s Dylan Delhart finished with a 44.
Daniel Cardoza was the next best finisher for Ripon (1-0, 3-1 overall), as he checked in with a 45. Mark Bigelow added a 47, Matty Gay 48 and Nick Mendonsa 57.
