TRACY — Four first-half Lathrop interceptions were too much for the Spartans to overcome as West defeated Lathrop 19-8 on Thursday in non-league freshman football action at Steve Lopez Stadium.

Even when things went good for the Spartans, they did not stay that way for long. Andrew Rodriguez intercepted a Wolf Pack pass late in the third period and returned it 44 yards to the West 1-yard line where the ball came loose and the Wolf Pack recovered.

However, Lathrop bottled up West on the ensuing position and took over just inside the Wolf Pack 10 when Khali Malbrough (six carries, 66 yards) ran the ball in for the lone Spartans touchdown.

Sergio Villencia had 12 carries for Lathrop for 32 yards.

Bryan Resendiz led the Lathrop defense with seven tackles. Andre Prieto and Elijah Becerra added five apiece.

Trabron Russell added another first-period Manteca score and Jacob Dejesus (10 carries, 80 yards) capped the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 5-yard touchdown run

Leo Bonilla added seven carries for 59 yards for the Buffaloes.

Troy Avila and Angel Garay each made six tackles for Manteca with five of Avila’s tackles being for losses. Dom Rea (forced fumble, pass defense) and Isaac Searcy ( interception) each had two tackles, Kai Begonia an  interception and Evan Ott three tackles, two for a loss.

Weston Ranch 14,

Ceres 14

Four Cougars turnovers negated a 14-0 Weston Ranch lead in non-league action Thursday at Ceres High School.

Marcel Phillips put Weston Ranch  up 8-0 when he returned a punt 69 yards for a first-quarter  touchdown. Eric Shivers put the Cougars ahead 14-0 in the second period when he ran in a touchdown from 24 yards out.

Late in the first half, the Bulldogs converted a Weston Ranch fumble into a score and that happened again in the second half. The Cougars threatened on a last-minute drive but time ran out before they could punch it into the end zone.
