20 years ago: January 16, 1998 – Manteca High, fueled by the performance of center Katie DeRoos, broke down East Union High’s interior defense en route to a convincing 55-36 basketball victory Thursday evening in the Winter Gym. DeRoos, a sophomore, had a career night with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Cynthia Mathews finished with 13 points and seven rebounds to pace EU. Jenny Bauer added 10 points in a losing cause.

Sierra High’s girls outscored previously undefeated Los Banos High 24-9 in the fourth quarter and handed the Tigers their first league basketball loss, 55-50, last night. Offensively, Kristen Huntley had 16 points and seven blocked shots for Coach Dan Cunial’s squad. Teammate Christi Goodhart also tanked 16, including 10 of 11 at the free throw line.

Lisa Campbell scored a pair of goals and assisted on two others as the East Union High soccer team braved the rain by blanking Los Banos High 6-0. Other goals were scored by Meghan Doyle, Jessica Correia, Amber Stone and Lisa Quaresma. The Lady Lancers held Los Banos without a single shot on goal.

Manteca High remained unbeaten in league soccer play with a 2-0 victory over the defensive-minded Oakdale High side at Guss Schmiedt  Field yesterday. Amy Birmingham and Shaina Medeiros each scored a goal to lead the Lady Buffs.  MHS is now 7-5-1 overall.

Sierra High’s Dina Carames scored 12 minutes into the soccer match off an assist by Jenni Amaya and the Timberwolves held on for a 1-0 win over host East Union High in a well-executed defensive game. Goalie Amy Basset had seven saves for the winners. Sierra had 23 shots on goal.

The East Union High wrestlers, seeking their first league victory, secured one the hard way Tuesday by defeating intra-city rival Sierra High35-33 in a thrilling match at the Dalben Center. EU pins were by Brian Glancey (135) and Raymond Martin (160). Lancer Coach Dudley Kinlaw was particularly impressed by Martin’s performance as it is his first year of wrestling.

20 years ago: January 9, 1998 – One night after the Sierra High girls played what Coach Dan Cunial called “an embarrassing performance” in a lop-sided loss to Tracy High, the Lady Timberwolves took their frustrations out on intra-city rival Manteca High. On Thursday, the basketball team defeated the Lady Buffaloes 60-48 in the Sierra gym. Senior point guard Christi Goodhart broke loose for a game-high 15 points. Kristen Huntley added 13 points to go with Tiffany Guzman’s 12, while Liz Nuttmann pulled down 12 rebounds in the win. Janelle Riella netted 14 points for the Lady Buffs and teammate Katie DeRoos added 12 more.

The Manteca High wrestling team wasn’t at full strength but still had enough to beat the visiting Los Banos High squad 43-21 Thursday night. Tim Elliott (119), Jason Culpepper (145) and Ara Kimbrough (189) all posted pins for the Buffaloes.

Sierra High fell victim to the host West High in Tracy 32-22 in league wrestling action on Thursday in a contest that wasn’t decided until the final match. Nick Brown and David Gute scored pins for the T’wolves.

Defending VOL wrestling champions Oakdale High cruised past East Union High 62-3 yesterday.

Visiting Oakdale High sank two free throws in the final minute to seal a 42-38 win over East Union High in girls’ basketball action at Dalben Center last night. Jaynee Moon and Jenny Bauer each scored 12 points for the Lancers as standout guard Cynthia Mathews was held to two points.

The Sierra High girls’ soccer team sustained its first-ever VOL tie, 0-0 to Sonora High, on Thursday. The result also marked the first time Sierra had failed to win a league match in over two varsity seasons. “We knew this was going to happen some time,” said T’wolf coach Manuel Pires, whose team carried a 31-0 all-time league record into the match.

East Union High’s girls’ soccer team shut out West High 2-0 on Thursday behind goals by junior forward Meghan Doyle and senior fullback Breanne Stapleton. The West squad had only six shots on goal.

Manteca High junior backup goalie Susan Gouaux was in the starting lineup as the visiting Lady Buff soccer team took on host Los Banos High on Thursday. Gouaux took command and recorded 18 saves en route to MHS’s 2-1 defeat of the Lady Tigers. Shaina Medeiros and Megan Dei Rossi netted the goals for Manteca.

Anchored by a stellar defensive performance that caused Los Banos High to commit 26 turnovers, East Union High opened VOL basketball play with a 49-38 victory over the Tigers at Dalben Center Wednesday night. Senior point guard Derrick Kibler erupted for a game-high 18 points, including three 3-pointers. Matt Stricker finished with 11 points and eight rebounds for the Lancers.

Paul Rebeiro’s off-balance 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime enabled Manteca High to open VOL basketball play on the road with a bang by defeating Sonora High 71-69 Wednesday evening. It was Rebeiro’s only 3-pointer of the game. Sophomore Adam Jacobs led the Buff assault with 16 points, including four three’s. Rebeiro and Jon Cardoza each finished with 14 points to go with Chris Walters’ 12.

The Sierra High cage squad stunned the hometown Tracy High netters with a 16-7 first-quarter lead and went on to defeat the Bulldogs 57-53 Wednesday in the league opener for both teams. Three players scored in double figures for Coach Frank Triglia as Brandon Marable had a team-high 11 points and Jeremy Cook and Henry Turner each scored 10 counters.
