TURLOCK — There are lots of sounds associated with the fair: The mooing of cows, the whirl of amusement rides, the clickety-clack of antique tractors, the pop of kettle corn, and the laughter of fair revelers.

But the sounds that really draw in the crowds are the beat of a drum, the strum of a guitar, and the refrain of a familiar chorus.

For decade after decade the Stanislaus County Fair has been bringing in musical acts that delight audiences of wide musical tastes and this year looks to be no exception. The entertainment at this year’s fair runs the gamut of genres, from country to rock and Latin to spiritual.

Country music superstar Clint Black will kick off the fair’s entertainment line-up when he takes the stage on July 15. Black shot up to country stardom in 1989 with the release of his debut album, “Killin’ Time,” which went triple platinum.

The music scenes at the fair will do a 180 degree turn the following night on July 16, when the R & B group Boyz II Men perform. The four-time Grammy-winning group found success in the ‘90s with hits like “Motownphilly,” “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday,” and “End Of The Road.” The group just celebrated their 20th anniversary with the release of “Love.”

Rock ‘N’ Roll mainstays America are coming to the fair July 17. America became a household name in the ‘70s with hits like “A Horse With No Name,” “You Can Do Magic” and “Sister Golden Hair.”

On July 18, Christian musicians and fan favorites MercyMe will be taking the stage. The multiplatinum-selling band was named America’s Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist at the 2010 American Music Awards.

Clay Walker has been making hits on the country music charts for 17 years and he’ll bring his real life inspired songs to the stage July 19.

Not all adults will recognize the group Big Time Rush, but the group is sure to set the kids squealing when they take the stage July 20. The group hails from the Nickelodeon show of the same name and recently unveiled their debut album “BTR.” The Bob and Tom Comedy All-Stars Tour is bringing a host of comedy headliners to town for a night of laughs on July 21.

Punk and hardrock maven Joan Jett will rock the house with the Blackhearts on July 22. Jett has hit the charts multiple times with songs like “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll” and “I Hate Myself For Loving You.”

Performers Joe Nichols and Heidi Newfield are relative newcomers to the country scene, but that hasn’t stopped them from racking up the hits. Both will be taking the stage July 23.

La Original Banda de Limon de Salvador Lizarraga will bring some Latin flair to the fair when they perform July 24. The Grammy-nominated 17-member band has had hits with “Que Se Te Olvido” and “Soledad.”

All the headline shows are performing on the Budweiser Variety Free Stage and all shows are set to start at 8:30 p.m. Shows are free with fair admission.
