Play opens 3- day run tonight at Manteca High

Manteca Unified elementary school students were treated to a sneak performance of Fiddler on the Roof on Wednesday.

That’s the spring musical performed by Manteca High Theatre under the directions of long-time drama teacher Dawn Coyan.

Serving as her assistant director is Laurence Turner, who is a former student and currently the long-term sub at MHS. He has a role as the Rabbi.

The musical by Jerry Brock, based on the book by Joseph Stein (lyrics by Sheldon Harnick), will have four performances at the MHS Mulvihill Theater, 450 E. Yosemite Ave. – Thursday at 6:30 p.m.; Friday at 6:30 p.m.; and Saturday with 1:30 p.m. matinee followed by an encore performance at 6:30.

Tickets are $10 for adults, and $8 for students / children.

Fiddler on the Roof takes place in 1905 on the eve of the Russian Revolutionary Period in the small western village of Anatevka.

The cast consists of Ethan Matthew as Tevye, the Dairyman, and Breanna Gibbs as Golde, his wife. The daughters are played by Ava Dos Reis (Tzeitel), Lourdes Garay (Hodel), Tera Shearin (Chava), Ruby Ann Noonkester (Shprintze), and Olivia Mulzet (Bielke).

Other cast members include Jacob Janssen as Motel, the Tailor; Rylee Newquist as the Matchmaker, Yente; Oliver Corral as the Innkeeper, Mordcha; Matthew Cuevas as Avram, the Bookseller; Ren Muniz as the Rabbi’s son, Mendel; Nolan Marley as Perchik, the student; and KR Karthikeyan as Lazar Wolfe, the butcher.

Fiddler on the Roof will feature musical numbers such as “Matchmaker,” “If I Were a Richman,” “The Dream,” and “Sunrise, Sunset,” to name a few.

The musical will be accompanied by the school band led by teacher Tom Coyan, who is also on the keyboard.
