Five candidates are in the running for mayor of Lathrop.

Not running is Sonny Dhaliwal, who served six terms as mayor. He’s in a runoff with ex-Manteca Mayor and former City Councilman Steve DeBrum for the District 3 seat on the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors in the Nov. 5 elections.

Among those seeking the mayoral term of two years are current Lathrop City Councilman Paul Akinjo, former Planning Commissioner Paul Camareno, Measure C Oversight Commissioner Mansoor Faze, business owner Diana Radonic, and Venkat Vempati, who took out filing papers earlier this week.

Two Council member terms are available – for voters, the mayor and both council seats are at-large selections.

Up for the grabs are the posts currently occupied by Minnie “Cotton” Diallo and Jennifer Torres-O’Callahan.

As of Wednesday, Torres-O’Callahan filed not too long ago for re-election as did Steve Dresser, a former councilman and ex-planning commissioner.

The two seats are for four-year terms.

According to the City of Lathrop website, the nomination period for these offices will close this Friday (Aug. 9) at 5 p.m.
